Synopsis
From 1903 to 1979, the Panama Canal Zone, located within the Republic of Panama, fell under U.S. military jurisdiction. Two years before U.S. control of the neutral Canal Zone ends, director Frederick Wiseman documents the everyday life of the area's inhabitants. The Zone contains a thriving community that includes shops and recreational and religious programs for the thousands of workers and government and military officials that oversee the canal's activities.
