Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The first five or 10 minutes of Airplane II -- The Sequel are genuinely funny -- so funny I thought maybe this movie was going to work. That turned out to be a premature hope. Rare T The sequel is still as weird as the prequel, but it falls short, even if just by a slight bit (now here's a sentence I'd love to see unravel in the movie). Many criticize the similarities with the first installment, but in my opinion that's what makes it a "sequel", and some jokes get even funnier once they were established in the first movie, kind of the same way they would as episodes progress in a sitcom. If one watched Airplane!, there is no reason not to watch Airplane II: The Sequel right after it. The quips, satire, and dark humor are as great as ever. The visualization of the future does not ruin the movie with illogical inaccuracies, since it was already established as a satirical interpretation, leaving a threshold for inaccuracies which paradoxically result in some realistic situations and thus humor. However, this weird universe where the movie is set is what leaves it behind its prequel, which was more grounded in reality in a way, given the obvious differences between airplane travel and blasting into outer space. Also, there are some unnecessary stereotypes which seem gimmicky rather than being integrated with any satire or dark humor. Still, the cast are as great as in their previous performance, if not better, and the result is an overall enjoyable and funny movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/10/24 Full Review Bryce G The first Airplane is in my top 3 movies of all time, the sequel is in my bottom 3. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Brianna B Straight up terrible Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/18/23 Full Review Matthew B Airplane II's biggest failure was its refusal to move out of the shadow of the first movie. The same characters, storyline, and even many of the same jokes were recycled, hardly suggesting a franchise at the height of its strength. With such a thin stretching of material, the promise at the end of the credits that there would be a third movie was always going to be optimistic. Along the way, the movie spoofs a number of other films, including Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey, E.T. and the Star Trek films, none of which deserve to be mocked. The story does include a few elements from other air disaster movies, but it is essentially more of the same. I had the unusual experience of watching Airplane II before I saw the original movie, and I have to admit that without prior knowledge of the earlier movie, the sequel is rather funny. After seeing the first movie, some of the jokes this time round seem tired, but I still think that it has some good moments. If you would like to read my full review of both Airplane movies, I made a blog about them at https://themoviescreenscene.wordpress.com/2020/06/27/flight-of-the-spoofs-airplane-1980-and-airplane-ii-the-sequel-1982/ Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Red T It's Disappointingly Bad. The first 15 minutes is actually REALLY good and on par with the first one but than it just goes with jokes that fall flat, stupid, or are just repeating what the first one did almost exactly setup and delivery. Than it gets hit or miss and the last 15 minutes with William Shatner is actually the worst part, he just isn't funny at all and I couldn't wait for it to end. The acting is ok itself but just is weighed down by the subpar jokes. The music is boring, the editing is terrible and just trying to rehash the plot except in space. This is clearly trying to capitalize on the Sci-Fi craze. The visual gags again aren't good in general outside of the first 15 minutes. Watch the first 15 minutes and than turn this off.
