When ailing Kansas wheat farmer Elroy "Bud" Burkhardt (Dennis Weaver) discovers he has lung cancer, the fiercely independent man grudgingly agrees to hire a laborer to help him harvest the season's crops. He finds a most unlikely candidate for the job -- hitchhiker Larry Koenig (Kurt Russell), an indolent New York model rendered unemployable by a facial injury. But for Koenig to become a viable farmhand, Burkhardt will have to teach him the value of an honest day's work.
