Peter Bradshaw Guardian It is the most extravagantly self-indulgent piece of pure loopiness imaginable - but gripping as well. A piece of experimentalism at odds with convention. Rated: 4/5 Jun 8, 2012 Full Review David Jenkins Little White Lies Vaguely interesting, but mostly painful and confusing. Rated: 2/5 Jun 7, 2012 Full Review Dave Calhoun Time Out A cri de coeur, constructed as a fly-on-the-wall doc. Rated: 3/5 Jun 6, 2012 Full Review Naila Scargill Trebuchet Themes of depression, introspection and gradual resurfacing are universal; anybody who has ever struggled with their mental health could take something from Arirang. Feb 28, 2019 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis HanCinema Somewhat interesting, but as most films that are actually self-portraits, it is mostly addressed to the director's fans. The experimental nature of it also moves towards that direction. Jan 6, 2019 Full Review Shaun Munro What Culture There are intelligent and provocative ideas within Kim Ki-duk's unbearably self-serving docudrama, but the auteur should stick to what he knows best. Audience Member definitely a must-watch if you're a Kim Ki-duk fan. boy's got some issues. or, had some issues. not sure where he's at with it all now. casual fans probably don't need to watch this one. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member To understand the purpose of the movie arirang, you'll have to get to know Kim ki duk, what his works aims at, why in spite of being a world renowned, prolific , consistent and aruably, one of the greatest filmmakers of the generation, he spent 3 years in some wooden shack in the bitter cold and isolation of korean wilderness, far from humanity. And you'll have to know what the song Arirang signifies to Koreans. Kim ki duk says in the movie, arirang is a song which Koreans sings in the moments which overwhelms them by feelings of isolation, melancholia and hopelessness. Something which calms them down and reassures them. Making this movie has done exactly the same to kim ki duk. I wont write up the translation of the song here as it is pointless , but listening to kim ki duk sing it in film ending mostly with him weeping hysterically, it is impossible not to feel what it signifies to him. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Shot in rudimentary documentary style, Arirang is self indulgent auteur cinema at it's narcissistic best that can wear on the viewer unless one was an avid fan of the filmmaker. The majority of the film, aglow in a red haze, featured a tightly cropped frame of Mr. Kim's face whining, ranting, musing, lamenting, swearing, etc. If you enjoy forced captivity with an angry and verbally abusive drunk, then have at it! This is your movie! The only interesting frames were of the food he prepared and ate. The film finally reached it's climax when he began using the gun he carefully crafted by hand. I admit, I'm not familiar with his acclaimed body of work so I had no vested interest in Mr. Kim, however this documentary did nothing to attract me to the man behind the great film maker, so I'm told, that he obviously is. I have never felt such relief exiting a venue. Seriously, someone shoot me! I guess I'll netflix some of his films to see why he's a big deal. I get the feeling even if I WAS an obsessive fan of Mr. Kim, I'd still want someone to shoot me to put me out of my misery in this film. Narcissistic self indulgence just isn't my cup of tea. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Teatterista lÃhtiessÃni katselin ympÃrilleni, kuin elokuvaa itsekin, ja vaikutus kesti lÃhes koko loppuillan, tai sitten huomioin maailmaa, kuten Ki-Duk kehoitti loytÃen jatkuvasti ympÃriltÃni ilmaisuja ihmisten hyvyydestà tai pahuudesta, jollaista elokuvat yleisestikin ovat, mutta konstruoidummassa muodossa. TÃmÃn ollessa Arirangin pinnallisempia huomioita. ErittÃin suositeltavaa on katsoa ohjaajalta pari leffaa pohjalle ennen tÃtÃ, koska aiempaan elÃmÃÃ,¤Ãnsà henkilo/ohjaaja/musiikki/lavastaja/kÃsikirjoittaja viittaa toistuvasti.
