Audience Member Another early Chaplin short. I am not impressed with this one either. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Fairly standard Chaplin for this era. Charlie gets interested in a couple of different women, ends up fighting with the men in their lives, until everyone turns on Charlie. There's some use of close-up on Charlie here, interesting because that doesn't happen much in these early films. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member good stuff but not one of Charlies best Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member Let me be clear about this; I really, really like Charlie Chaplin's feature films. "The Kid", "Modern Times", "City Lights", "The Great Dictator", et cetera, are at once funny, poignant, emotional, well constructed, and sophisticated. Unfortunately, that's more than I can say for "By the Sea", or most of Chaplin's other simple shorts. These rarely consist of anything more than Charlie repeatedly slapping someone in the face, kicking someone in the ass, or tripping someone with his cane. 1915 audiences might have been amused, but this sort of mindless, repetitive slapstick just doesn't age very well, I'm afraid.
