Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) David Soren's computer-animated adaptation of Dav Pilkey's hit series of children's books avoids the pitfalls with enough success to amuse all ages. Rated: 3/5 Sep 22, 2017 Full Review James White Empire Magazine Silly and aimed squarely at the younger crowd, Captain Underpants has enough spirit to be entertaining. Xavier L I love it it's a very nice and funny movie and the books definitely didn't deserve to get banned Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Nicholas C A classic based off the books I've never read, like most things. I don't read Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/25 Full Review AnimatorOfTheSecond. A One of the best animated movies i know, the humor may seem stupid and small minded to some, but the jokes are incredibley tasteful. The animation is brilliant and the film is a clever witty film that doesn't take itself seriously because it doesn't have too. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/25 Full Review Shrek L A cinematic masterpiece the only movie where the critics are right. This movie made me cry 17,000 times and I am still crying because it is so good. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/02/25 Full Review Nolan S loved it when I first watched in 2017 and love to rewatch it from time to time also weird Al’s theme for the credits is a banger Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Galaxy G Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017) - A Silly Yet Fun Ride? So, we finally did it. We reacted to Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, and well… that happened. Going into this, we weren’t entirely sure what to expect. The books have a massive following, especially among younger audiences, but would the humor and story hold up for us? Let’s break it down. The Premise The movie follows George and Harold, two best friends who love creating comics and pulling pranks on their grumpy principal, Mr. Krupp. When they accidentally hypnotize him into thinking he’s the ridiculously clad superhero Captain Underpants, chaos ensues. Meanwhile, the villainous Professor P (or, rather, Professor Poopypants, because of course) has a diabolical plan to rid the world of laughter. The Humor: Hit or Miss Right out of the gate, it’s clear this movie leans heavily into slapstick and potty humor. Some of it lands well—there were a few genuinely clever jokes—but a lot of it felt aimed squarely at the elementary school crowd. And that’s fine! Captain Underpants was never meant to be highbrow comedy. If you're a kid, the absurdity of talking toilets, hypnotized principals, and over-the-top pranks will probably be hilarious. For adults? It’s a mixed bag. There were moments that made us laugh, and others where we felt our brain cells slowly melting. Animation and Style One thing we really appreciated was the animation. The visuals are slick, colorful, and even experiment with different animation styles in certain scenes. The energy and creativity are undeniable, and it feels very faithful to the books. The voice acting also helps bring the characters to life—especially Ed Helms as the hilariously clueless Captain Underpants/Mr. Krupp. The Plot: A Bit of a Mess This movie isn’t about deep storytelling, and that’s okay. But it does feel like the film loses control of itself at times. It starts off strong with a fun introduction to George and Harold’s friendship, but as the plot progresses, it spirals into complete absurdity (which, again, is kind of the point). By the time we reach the giant toilet robot battle and the kids turning into zombie-like beings from laughter removal, we were just along for the ride, whether we liked it or not. Final Verdict Here’s the thing—if you’re an elementary school-aged kid or a big fan of the books, this movie is going to be a blast. It captures the wild, carefree humor that Captain Underpants is known for. However, as adults watching it for the first time, it was a bit much. The humor can be grating, and the plot is pure chaos. That said, we get why this movie has its audience. It’s not bad—it’s just not really for us. Final Score: For Kids: ★★★★☆ (4/5) - It’s fun, colorful, and packed with laughs. For Adults: ★★☆☆☆ (2/5) - Some good moments, but a lot of cringe. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/25 Full Review Read all reviews
