As a die-hard zombie fan I'm well aware of how the '...of the living dead' part of the original film's title was no longer allowed to be used, hence the franchise kind of branched off in two different directions. Either way, I also knew 'City of the Living Dead' was not cannon in whichever series of undead ghouls.
However, I figured that at least it would have some sort of redeeming story which - loosely - acted like it was - maybe - in the same universe as one of the other films. Heck, I'd settle for a coherent story!
I've checked other reviews and it appears that it really is a cult classic and has many fans who love it. I guess I just didn't 'get' it. I found it boring and a right mess with no real story to speak of. I gathered it was something to do with stopping the dead from rising on Halloween, or something.
If you're expecting hordes of zombies terrorising humans, you'll be disappointed. The walkers do show up from time to time, but it's in ones and twos - no crowds. If it had one good point it was the gore. There are some pretty gruesome practical effects which deserve praise for their horrific realism.
But that wasn't enough for me. I just found it boring. Personally, I'll stick to Romero's movies (and the 'spin off' living dead series. Oh, and was it just me or does 'City of the Living Dead' borrow some of the music from George A Romero's films?

City of the Living Dead has a sporadically decent score, some inventive make-up effects, and plenty of gore to go around. However, if you’re the type who doesn’t pay much attention to music and make-up and the thought of watching a woman vomit out her own intestines doesn’t have much appeal, you may want to avoid this movie. An Italian horror film by Lucio Fulci, a second-rate Dario Argento, City of the Living Dead is problematic in a bunch of ways – the plot is incomprehensible at the best of times (including the baffling finale), the dubbing of the non-English-speaking cast is brutal, the dialogue is embarrassing, the editing is choppy, and the acting is more horrific than many of the gruesome scenes on display. Unless you’re really into movies with the Italian giallo vibe, avoid this at all costs.

This is a awesome movie. The gore and set pieces ooze with atmosphere. In my opinion, this movie and Zombie are 2 of the best Italian horror movies ever made. The ending of this movie doesn't make sense, but the rest of movie is so much fun, for the practical effects alone.

Después de que Fulci iniciara en el terror con Zombie (1979) y haber tenido bastante éxito en ello, el director ya estaba decidido que iba a dedicarse al cine de terror. Su siguiente paso fue realizar City Of The Living para dar comienzo a una trilogía. Hay que decir que City Of The Living Dead no llega a ofrecer los litros de sangre que se pudieron admirar en Zombie. Aquí hay pocas escenas gores y puede que en ese aspecto, esta película no llega a estar a la altura de Zombie. City Of The Living Dead no necesitaba exactamente ofrecer bastante gore y violencia extrema porque lo que ofrece es una excelente historia de terror con una buena atmosfera. Es muy evidente que la película está inspirada en la mitología de las obras de H.P. Lovecraft. La evidencia más clara es el pueblo de Dunwich donde transcurre la historia. La película no es exactamente una adaptación de The Dunwich Horror, solo toma el nombre del pueblo ficticio y su relación con la brujería. Además, la película narra una historia donde ocurren horrores inexplicables que no siguen una lógica. Eso es tomado del lore de Lovecraft porque el eje central del terror en la literatura de Lovecraft es que desafía la comprensión humana. Los personajes tratan de darle una razón a los eventos extraños que ocurren en Dunwich, pero no pueden. A diferencia de los muertos vivientes vistos en Zombie, aquí estos seres son algo parecido a un fantasma. Estos seres aparecen manifestándose de forma física y luego desaparecen, sobre todo cuando no hay que mirarlos a los ojos. Lo que la película nunca justifica es el suicidio del Padre Thomas al principio y cómo eso fue clave para abrir un portal al más allá. Lo mismo pasa con el final, pero eso es algo que ya se iría descifrando en las próximas dos entregas de la trilogía. La mención de El Libro De Enoc parece ser una pista sobre el lore de esta trilogía, ya que dicho libro trata del apocalipsis según la religión hebrea y el concepto de esta trilogía de películas sería sobre los entes del más allá a punto de desatar un apocalipsis que puede condenar a la humanidad. Eso se vería mucho más claramente en The Beyond. Además, la muerte del Padre Thomas parece ser una referencia hacia el obispo Cipriano que defendió El Libro De Enoc y termino siendo ejecutado acusado de herejía. Dicho Obispo fue acusado de brujería y puede que esta referencia indirecta sirva como para deducir que el Padre Thomas quizás haya estado involucrado en la brujería y su muerte fue intencional como parte de un rito para abrir el portal hacia el más allá. Eso sería solo una teoría, pero suficiente para justificar lo que esta película no explica al principio y porque el Padre Thomas aparece como la fuerza malévola que controla a los muertos. Lo que se puede notar es que a diferencia de Zombie, esta película se hizo con un equipo más reducido porque son pocas las personas que se ven en Dunwich. Es como si Dunwich ya fuera un pueblo fantasma desde el inicio. La banda sonora de Fabio Frizzi es buena y lo curioso es que se puede notar en dos momentos de la película que Fabio usó una especie de versión reciclada del tema musical de Zombie. Algo que no está mal, pero le quita un poco de originalidad a la película. Claro que la película tiene algunas ideas que ya se vieron en otras películas, pero eso no significa que la película sea mala. City Of The Living Dead es una historia de terror tradicional bien plasmada y que funciona más como una película al estilo de Lovecraft y no como una película de zombies. Sería erróneo decir que es una película de zombies y no es una película muy sanguinosa tampoco, pero sí es una buena película de terror. No tanto como Zombie, pero logra ser una de las más destacables de Fulci. Es simplemente un buen inicio para la trilogía. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 9/10.
