Critics Consensus

Despite strong performances from Bryan Cranston and Alice Eve, Cold Comes the Night is undone by a series of illogical plot twists.

Wendy Ide The Times (UK) This low-budget nail-biter is not particularly accomplished or effective, but it is redeemed somewhat by the two central performances. Aug 16, 2023 Full Review Alonso Duralde What the Flick?! Cranston's accent is Dick-Van-Dyke-in-Mary-Poppins-bad. Jan 13, 2014 Full Review Christy Lemire RogerEbert.com "Cold Comes the Night" provides Eve with an opportunity to showcase yet another side of her talent. Rated: 2/4 Jan 10, 2014 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com A generous throwback to those cinematic days when even familiar tales could be told with enough verve to initiate excitement and delight. Rated: 3/5 Aug 29, 2019 Full Review Amon Warmann CineVue The film's quality of the acting is not matched by more adventurous material. Without its two lead stars, Cold Comes the Night would be little more than a glorified DTV also-ran. Rated: 2/5 Mar 2, 2019 Full Review Austin Trunick Under the Radar Cranston has plenty of menace left over following the end of Breaking Bad, and his fans will forgive the distracting Polish accent he keeps up through the film. BadNews R First off — let’s talk about the title. Cold Comes the Night is a very awkward and weird title for a movie. It doesn’t immediately connect you to the premise, and right from the start I was left wondering: what exactly are we doing here? That being said, Bryan Cranston does a good job with what he’s given. His performance is solid, and he brings weight to the film. But overall, the movie itself is just… okay. It’s not great, it’s not memorable, and it’s certainly not something I’ll be jumping up and down to recommend. Honestly, I had never even heard of it until now. The director does what they can to try and captivate the audience through this suspenseful setup about unmarked bills, greed, and survival. The core of the story is interesting: a woman pulled into this dangerous mess while trying to protect herself and her daughter. That scorned mother angle could have been powerful, but the execution doesn’t land as hard as it should. The biggest problem is that the film doesn’t lean into enough action. It never really shifts into that action-packed gear where the tension pays off. Instead, it’s weighed down by dialogue-heavy sequences that stall the momentum. The script definitely needed more battles, more stakes, and more back-and-forth intensity between the characters. Without it, the film feels flat and ultimately forgettable. Verdict: Watchable once for Bryan Cranston’s performance, but not something I’d ever revisit. A thriller that aimed for suspense but ended up too quiet for its own good. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/24/25 Full Review Georgan G Hated the pet turtle in a too small plastic cage! The movie was well acted by Eve & Cranston & the plot was full of interesting twists. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Hans O How can you lock an animal (turtle) in such a small cage? Simply cruel! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Jordan W It’s thrilling to watch Bryan Cranston be a hitman with a silly Russian accent alongside an emotional powerhouse performance in Alice Eve as Logan Green-Marshall overacts the hell out of his monstrous character. The plot is sort of ridiculous and overwrought but it’s a genuinely gripping little thriller that consistently keeps itself engaging. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/05/24 Full Review CT Y I was starting to get into this movie when Leo Fitzpatrick showed up. After a grimacing 5 minutes of him doing something he thinks was acting I had to turn it off. The guy has no idea how to act. It was like watch a child pretending to be somebody but worse because the kid really can fantasize. Not Fitzpatrick. I just wonder how the hell he got this or any role. Really too bad.
