Audience Member I am still not sure what to make of this perplexing, aggressively baffling film. Even by the standards of Ruiz's often aggressively baffling career, this is monumentally dense and hermetic. Formally, it is concerned with how to take nine independent narrative premises in order to combine and overlap them into as many imaginative forms or related "stories" possible-- stories where the spatial and temporal logic and narrative continuity don't really appeal. And so, in typical Ruiz fashion, we get mirror worlds, overlapping space and times, and nonsensical debates. This almost has more in common with avant-garde jazz musicians like Anthony Braxton who explore the tension between pre-ordained compositional structures in order to find moments for chance and improvisations. In other words, in terms of the film, rule-based structures create illogical, irrational, and arbitrarily seeming spatial and temporal narrative outcomes. I am amazed Ruiz even got this made, not that it's likely to land on dvd anytime soon, but still. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
