      Critics Consensus

Cruella can't quite answer the question of why its title character needed an origin story, but this dazzling visual feast is awfully fun to watch whenever its leading ladies lock horns. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

Academy Award (R) winner Emma Stone ("La La Land") stars in Disney's "Cruella," an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious - and notoriously fashionable - villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. "Cruella," which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella's flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar (R) winner Emma Thompson ("Howards End," "Sense & Sensibility"). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

As a childhood fan of all versions of 101 Dalmatians, I went into this movie with piles of skepticism. To my surprise, I quite enjoyed it. It's been compared to Devil Wears Prada and Joker, and both are fair. To the Joker comparison, it feels like there's an earlier script that is much darker, as I kept seeing the places where the film could have gone a different more disturbing route if it had so chosen. But it is a Disney film, and it will pull back. I like Disney films, I like the Disney feel, but this is a film I feel could have been better without the Disney-fication But with stylish direction, a great ensemble cast, and a shockingly enjoyable performance from Emma Stone still works amidst the Disney tropes. I liked it.

Disney does "The Devil Wears Prada" in this reimagination of the iconic villain from "101 Dalmations" following the somewhat turbulent trend of Maleficent and you know what? It really worked for me. I especially love how the film utilizes the cultural phenomenon of 1970's Punk in the UK by marrying the aesthetic and spirit to Cruella's character and juxtaposing it against the conservative fashion world she battles. My only gripe with the film really is the titular protagonist plays it safe and never touches deep enough on the darker, "crueller" aspects of her character. Unfortunately expected in a Disney production but it would've made her epiphanic transformation into the 3rd act (or rather 5th act) much stronger and probably would've let the writers make the narrative thematically clearer. Cruella is a somewhat familiar story about a young woman who through misguided mentorship and hardship must come to terms with her past to find herself. Although somewhat muddled in the message it wants to send, the film finds a lot of fun and some twists along the way while tying up rather neatly. Also I originally thought Emma Stone was a little miscast in the role but by the closing of the film her vicious performance won me over 😈
