4/5
Memorable make-up effects, an ode to Mario Bava and an iconic performance by utterly perfect Rita Macedo make The Curse of The Crying Woman a memorable piece of Mexican Gothic. The climax is a little too drawn-out, but otherwise this film is a hoot! Go to Full Review

Though there is nothing original at all about it, The Curse of the Crying Woman rises above the also-rans to become a minor classic of gothic horror. Go to Full Review

08/06/2007 Directed by Rafael Baledon Starring Carlos Lopez Moctezuma, Domingo Soler, Abel Salazar, Rosita Arenas, Rita Macedo Mexican horror monster movie with arresting black and white imagery although the set would stack up with those of Ed Wood’s. Ironically, the lighting is useless (candles lit have no effect here and you’d wonder what time of day it is) and if they had only put some windows, there would have been mood. It’s the story of a niece who comes home to an aunt who specializes in resurrecting an ancient corpse that would grant her enormous powers. She already could shapeshift and turn her eyes pitch black, too bad she couldn’t play better organ. There’s an Igor-like henchman and a rotting abomination in the attic. Characters get thrown down several stories or their neck broken by a chain only to appear the following scene very much alive. Scenes are incomprehensible patches of the story but there are some neat tricks with the camera creating illusions that enlivens the movie. Best Scene: Flashback in negative.
