Poet, romantic and sword fighter Cyrano de Bergerac (Jose Ferrer) loves the beautiful Roxane (Mala Powers), but although he is proud enough of his bulbous proboscis that he regularly duels those who dare mock it, he fears she could never love a man with such an enormous nose. When he learns that she loves the handsome guardsman Christian (William Prince), Cyrano provides the tongue-tied young man with the words of love and devotion he wishes he could say to Roxanne himself.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a favorite play of mine, and so I was excited to see it on the silver screen. However, even though this is a movie, it feels like a filmed play. It's static and flat. Nevertheless, José Ferrer does make a great Cyrano. He delivers the lines in a believable way, and comes across as both arrogant and likeable, which isn't an easy tightrope to walk. And the script allows Edmond Rostand's/Brian Hooker's words to stand in the spotlight. I love the dialogue. Therefore I like this movie, because it is Cyrano, but I don't love it because it isn't as cinematic as I would have anticipated.

My rating is an unhappy compromise between a very poor production (it felt more like an early 30's film than one shot in 1950, and the pace slowed excessively in the second half) and José Ferrer's magnificent, mesmerizing performance. He is the only reason to see this film, but it's a good reason indeed.
