Audience Member Perhaps Joe Ma should direct more drama, if they continue to look as ravishingly good as Embrace Your Shadow. The story, written by Ma himself, is pretty much generic tear-jerk material, and Ma hardly breaks any new ground with it, but on the technical side Embrace Your Shadow is exquisitely executed. Ma has apparently learned the importance of visual storytelling, working with silent takes featuring lots of close ups and different angles, rather than simply forcing the actors to narrate the story with explanatory dialogue, or that horrid invention called voice-over. The acting is also perfectly convincing. Fiona Sit's performance is a very mature one, even though Embrace Your Shadow is only her second feature. Taiwanese hunk Dylan Kuo is also OK, but mostly as eye candy. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member A typical Hong Kong style fairy tale. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I've experimented with a few Chinese films over the summer, including this one. It was...okay. By any standards, I'd call it hokey. Not bad, just...hokey. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member I've experimented with a few Chinese films over the summer, including this one. It was...okay.
