Critics Consensus

A notorious stinker, From Justin To Kelly features banal songs, a witless plot, and non-existent chemistry between its American Idol-sanctioned leads.

Wesley Morris Boston Globe What's depressing about From Justin to Kelly, whose title seems to refer to the text messages he sends her, is that it's been made without a lick of love, skill, or, apparently, money. Rated: 2/5 Dec 24, 2010 Full Review Daniel Barnes Dare Daniel The film stars American Idol contestants Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson as reality show hostages grimly going through the motions of a bland and brainless Spring Break musical. Rated: 1/5 Aug 31, 2021 Full Review M. K. Terrell Christian Science Monitor Fans may enjoy their Idol songs and parents may appreciate its wholesomeness, but there's little else to recommend in this throwback to the '60s Beach Blanket movies. Tatum M I was a bit disappointed in this movie. With it being a musical I expected much more. I usually love musicals but this just felt cringy and annoying. I wanted to shut it off five minutes into the movie. The actresses had good voices and all but the movie was just so poorly made. The storyline was boring and the songs were just to many and don’t get me started on how corny the dance numbers were. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review TheMovieSearch R While "From Justin to Kelly" may have been labeled a box office failure and a flop, I must admit that I have a soft spot for the music and dancing featured in the film. Despite Kelly Clarkson's candid dislike for the project, I find it to be a fun and enjoyable movie. My fondness for the film is largely due to my admiration for Kelly Clarkson. Although Justin's character may come off as corny and over-the-top, Kelly shines with her fun and exciting performance. With a better storyline and script, I believe Kelly's involvement alone could have led to box office success. Unfortunately, the mismatched casting and weak storyline hindered the film's potential. From a critical standpoint, "From Justin to Kelly" falls short in terms of quality filmmaking. Despite its flaws, I am able to overlook the film's shortcomings and appreciate it for the enjoyment it brings me. While it may not be hailed as a cinematic masterpiece or a top-notch musical, Kelly Clarkson's commendable performance stands out. The experience may have deterred Kelly from pursuing similar projects in the future, but her talent as a megastar continues to shine. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/26/25 Full Review Audience Member terrible, totally sloppy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review steve d I love Kelly so I had some fun but it is absolute train-wreak territory besides that. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It's cheesy as hell, but if you want a fun movie to pass an hour and a half. Choose this. Even if it's just to laugh at. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A hidden gem.. Honestly i'm so sick of everyone bashing this movie.. For what it was it was AMAZING =) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
