Critics Consensus

A notorious stinker, From Justin To Kelly features banal songs, a witless plot, and non-existent chemistry between its American Idol-sanctioned leads.

Wesley Morris Boston Globe What's depressing about From Justin to Kelly, whose title seems to refer to the text messages he sends her, is that it's been made without a lick of love, skill, or, apparently, money. Rated: 1/4 Jul 9, 2014 Full Review Jack Mathews New York Daily News Easily the worst beach movie ever made. Jun 3, 2013 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Idol film expands 15 minutes of fame. Rated: 2/5 Dec 24, 2010 Full Review Daniel Barnes Dare Daniel The film stars American Idol contestants Justin Guarini and Kelly Clarkson as reality show hostages grimly going through the motions of a bland and brainless Spring Break musical. Rated: 1/5 Aug 31, 2021 Full Review M. K. Terrell Christian Science Monitor Fans may enjoy their Idol songs and parents may appreciate its wholesomeness, but there's little else to recommend in this throwback to the '60s Beach Blanket movies. Rated: 1.5/4 Jul 9, 2014 Full Review Robert Wilonsky New Times From Justin to Kelly is a musical so pedestrian it trips over its feet every time someone breaks into song or dance. Tatum M I was a bit disappointed in this movie. With it being a musical I expected much more. I usually love musicals but this just felt cringy and annoying. I wanted to shut it off five minutes into the movie. The actresses had good voices and all but the movie was just so poorly made. The storyline was boring and the songs were just to many and don’t get me started on how corny the dance numbers were. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Audience Member This movie is a box office fail, and a complete flop, but I will have to say I love the music and I love the dancing. I think Justin delivers a corny, ridiculous character that definitely should have been rewritten, but Kelly gives you the fun and exciting character, that you actually enjoy. I think if the love interest and the storyline was a little twisted, and gave you a better script I think kelley participating in the film would've been a box office success, but I think Justin was the wrong choice to move forward. They should have done something with Kelly only an allowed her the opportunity to succeed. But she didn't need it because she is a megastar to this day. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member terrible, totally sloppy. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review steve d I love Kelly so I had some fun but it is absolute train-wreak territory besides that. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member It's cheesy as hell, but if you want a fun movie to pass an hour and a half. Choose this. Even if it's just to laugh at. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member A hidden gem.. Honestly i'm so sick of everyone bashing this movie.. For what it was it was AMAZING =) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
