What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Abandons may wield powerful lead performers, but the flimsiness of its characters, lack of originality, and ultimately fervorless material makes for a lackluster experience.

The Abandons feels incomplete, to the point its finale plays less like a cliffhanger and more like Netflix forgot to upload the last few episodes. Go to Full Review

Anderson and Headey give it their full commitment, but their characters are painfully one note. “The Abandons” doesn’t rustle up the interest that it should, and that open-ended final begs for another season. Don’t think I’ll be saddling up for it. Go to Full Review

This soapiness, I hasten to note, is not a bad thing -- it's good. It's fun. Headey is terrific as a woman who does bad things for what she only barely manages to convince herself are good reasons, and Anderson is giving Iron Lady badassery. Go to Full Review

Not everyone can pull off a western. You think all you need are some cowboy hats and slowly plucked guitars. The Abandons also had the bona fides of being created by Kurt Sutter, and two excellent leads. You’d think that’d be great, right? Such a shame. Go to Full Review

This series is not a revolutionary reinvention of the Western, but it plays within the genre’s sandbox while also delivering our money’s worth. I am here for more of this series as long as Headey and Anderson are at the top of the bill. Go to Full Review

For all that emotions run high in the story, The Abandons takes a long time to warm up. Twists arrive, all of which you will see coming over the horizon in plenty of time to put the kettle on. What’s missing is a spark between Anderson and Heady. Go to Full Review

Hughe J @Hughe 4d The Abandons was released on streaming in 2025 and stars Lena Headey and Gilian Anderson as two matriarchs of warring families in the American West. Set in 1854 we get one family of diverse angsty orphans against the other family of rich folks; I see where this is going. Lots of girl bossing, racism, sexism, misogyny, and of course mistreatment of Native Americans gets worked into the episodes. Headey is her usual competent self but Anderson reminded me of her wooden role in Tron Ares and for me at least doesn't come across well. The rest of the cast are fine, for the most part, as they struggle with the different silly Romeo and Juliet inspired themes they have to work with. I read there was a lot of problems behind the scenes and it shows as the series feels really disjointed and rudderless. I enjoyed the set pieces and the costumes but for me the series was boring and I lost interest early. See more Martin B 5d It's a period piece so I enjoyed the backdrop and love the two leads. But it just seemed like all they wanted to do is prove women are just as greedy, viscous and bloodthirsty as men. And what's up with that ending. Using spectacularism in the interest of setting up a season two at the cost of providing a meaningful season one ending. See more Tatted N @TattedNerdStreams 5d It's unfortunate that Sutter wasn't able to give us his full vision. I can see the potential of what could have been. But that being said the show is still great. I maybe bias but Ryan Hurst carries any show he is in. I am sad may not get answers we are left asking, but I thoroughly enjoyed the show. See more Petros E @PetrosII 6d Great actors could not save the poor storyline. 7 episodes to build up to not much story telling of the times. Dr Quinn had better scripting. See more Alaina F @Alainaefisher Dec 29 I’m so surprised to see the low ratings of judgment on this show. At times, the acting may seem haste or too scripted. But genuinely I feel the show needed two-three more episodes. Things cut to the chase and lack detail so often in this show. But the acting is incredible and show cased talent from individuals that had not been seen in some time. The scenes can be choppy, such as, the lack of detail and depth regarding Albert’s teaching job. The lack of detail regarding Albert’s romance. Not enough context on other characters. But when we are provided detail and context it is really good. See more Some Guy F Dec 28 The first lines of the show are incredibly stilted dialogue, followed by a ridiculous action sequence that doesn't make much logical sense and already breaks the uncanny valley with it's bad CGI. This is the first 4 minutes of the show and it never sets about redeeming itself. See more Read all reviews
