Time Out Occasionally, and surprisingly, the man seems prepared to laugh at himself: one of the few unexpected features in an otherwise profoundly depressing and exploitative film. Feb 9, 2006 Full Review New York Times The film is virtually a self-portrait -- both terrifying and sorrowful. Rated: 3.5/5 May 9, 2005 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Idi Amin Dada is not a particularly good documentary, but it's often a fascinating one. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 23, 2004 Full Review Brian Susbielles InSession Film Amin on the surface looks like a buffoon, a cartoon character like Chaplin in The Great Dictator, but the evil he brought is undeniable. Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Despite ample ceremonial footage (much of it apparently at Amin's insistence) that grows tedious, this is nevertheless an effective peek into the mind of the dangerous dictator. Rated: 3/4 Sep 18, 2021 Full Review David Dugas United Press International One comes away wishing that in 90 minutes it somehow had been able to tell a great deal more about the general and why 10 million Ugandans have endured him this long. Audience Member The greatest 1.5 hours with real footage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review scott s If you liked "The Last King of Scotland" you will enjoy this documentary on Idi Amin. as much as he is painted as a ruthless dictator, he has such a lovable personality. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm still not sure what to make of this film - a French documentary crew follow Idi Amin, just as he's turning from local irritant to globally famous madman. There are incredibly chilling moments, like when he threatens to kill the person next to him before a swimming "race" if he does a proper dive into the pool (and therefore beats Amin), but then he appears funny and able to laugh at himself, and says some surprisingly sensible things about the state of the world at the time. I think it's fascinating and absolutely worth watching, though. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Ulospäin Aminissa huokuu jotain omituista lämminhenkistä karismaa. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member A self-portrait of insanity.
