There is a lot of previous material used here, but it's in New Jersey which makes for some extra jokes. The man is right about lots of things, but no more so than wedgies. You gotta get 'em early while no one's looking, because there is just no going about your daily business with underwear jammed up your ass... simply impossible.

I really liked this show. Carlin really shared his approach to language here. He explained he didn't want to be afraid of language; it's only words after all. Sure, that's been his philosophy all along. It was well-presented here. He demonstrated how he can find humor in any topic by examining rape. It takes a confident man to approach that subject. I think he succeeded in proving his point, even if it wasn't the funniest bit he's ever done.
The closing bit on euphemisms was spot on. Great bit. Carlin showed how language changed from "shell shock" in WWI, to "post-traumatic stress disorder" in Viet Nam. He explained how language has gone soft over time. He was absolutely correct in that. Great stuff.

Post-psychedelic George Carlin is The Man. I only hope my shit is as wired as his when I'm that old, still raging at the machine, making people think and challenging the consensus view. A fucking genius.

This may be where Carlin most effectively channels his most obvious predecessor and influence, Lenny Bruce. In addition to the usual profanity, he throws in racial epithets and misogynistic language, enough so that even my jaded sensibilities wince. This concert could easily have blown up in his face were it not for the fact that, by show's end it becomes evident that he's thrown all of this ugliness at us not to champion it or to disparage women and minorities but to a) as he states directly, deemphasize the demonization of language and instead place judgment on the thoughts behind some of our uglier vernacular and b) as he really only implies, making the charge seemingly almost as an afterthought, to put up a mirror to the audience and show them their biases, their preconceptions, and their prejudices if only they have the courage to take a really close look. Given the amount of cheering that this material receives, here he either has an audience that has long ago come to terms with its latent bigotry, or one that remained entirely clueless. One hopes that the lesson sank in on further reflection. This is powerful stuff, and for me the most unsettling material that Carlin has ever put out. And bless the man for rattling me like that.
