When twin brothers (Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti) arrive at their mother's (Naomi Watts) country home to discover her face covered in bandages--the result, she explains, of recent cosmetic surgery--they immediately sense that something doesn't add up. She sets strange new house rules, smokes in her bathroom, and secretly rips up a drawing they gave her--things their loving mother would never do. As her behavior grows increasingly bizarre and erratic, a horrifying thought takes root in the boys' minds: The sinking suspicion that the woman beneath the gauze, who's making their food and sleeping in the next room, isn't their mother at all.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Naomi Watts is as talented as ever, but this Goodnight Mommy remake has no real reason to exist.

Christy Lemire FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) This is not nearly as intense or terrifying [as the original]. Sep 19, 2022 Full Review Robert Levin Newsday This is not a bad movie but it's so relentlessly grim that it's hard to recommend. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 19, 2022 Full Review Stephen Romei The Australian It is not as shocking as the original, directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, but it is still a dark psychological thriller. Rated: 3.5/5 Sep 16, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan (Medium) Goodnight Mommy certainly has more misses than the original movie. There are some scary moments, but the overall tension of the original movie isn’t present in the remake. Sep 8, 2023 Full Review Shannon Connellan Mashable The remake dilutes the most shocking, violent elements of the original, in a way that reduces the film to a rather stale few hours of emotional and physical torment that underuses Watts' talent. Jul 28, 2023 Full Review Rebecca Johnson Film Focus Online Goodnight Mommy is a disappointing affair; it somehow manages to be both not as good as the original and way too similar, begging us to question why it has been made. Berneido M ABSOLUTE CINEMA!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review GABRIEL S Completely Better than the original. This movie is good because of the acting, scary moments, script, music and setting. The only bad thing about the story of the movie is the ending. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Moddather M Horrible Ending. The last 30 minutes were a disaster. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Jacob C While lacking the subtlety and atmosphere of the original film, this remake was a great spin on an already solid movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jeff M This is almost impossible to review without giving away spoilers, so I'm going to keep this one short and sweet. This is a creepy movie that was uncomfortable to watch. If Watts' goal was to create a 21st century MOMMIE DEAREST, well, she succeeds. The young Crovetti brothers are both quite good here and elevate the material to a more compelling level than it probably deserves. I have to be honest, though - I'm beginning to tire of these movies that seems specifically made for the sole purpose of having a surprise climax and/or ending. This is a remake of a 2014 Austrian film, and I'm assuming it had the same basic structure. I'm not sure everything that happened during the movie makes sense in context, but I wasn't interested enough to re-watch it to find out. I suppose at the end, the best word to express my feelings is BLAH. I wasn't miserable throughout the experience, but I don't think I'll remember this in a few days, although seeing Naomi Watts in that mask could result in a nightmare or two.
