allen p Like everyone else, I wanted to see this movie because of all the special effects. I had no problem with the dialogues being stupid, the actors being mediocre at best, the plot being written by a 10-year-old ("hey we have a space creature on the boat, let's open it without any protective clothing, or any protective measures at all") - but the special effects were actually not at all convincing, rather looked cheap. Really a shame. Still suitable for those who like 80's nostalgia. (Allen P, Sweden) Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/20/21 Full Review Audience Member The effects are the only saving grace of the movie. The performances are decent but nothing special, and it's clear that it's directed by someone using it as a vehicle for cool practical effects and not necessarily someone who's really interested in making a movie. It's still a fun time though, and if you're a fan of good practical monster effects, then you might want to give it a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Luke S It borrows so heavily from the The Thing, it's almost painful. Having said that, it's not awful, despite the material. Worth a go. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/21 Full Review Audience Member The FX are actually pretty good. This movie was basically created to show how these folks can do FX well, without the assistance of computers. And their work was cut out of that terrible The Thing prequel, so they were miffed and wanted to show everyone it was a mistake. Honestly, I agree. The Thing prequel was a horrible abortion and the computer effects were laughably bad. These effects would have been better. That said, though, this isn't a great movie. The story is a shameless ripoff of John Carpenter's script, the acting is mediocre, and the finer plot points get lost in the shuffle a tad too often for my liking. Still, was I entertained? Yes. I can't recommend it, but I doubt horror fans will find it to be a waste of time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie was bogged down by a Enormous Lack of budget. If this was a 2 million film instead of 1, it might have been awesome, but... the story was there, but executed Badly. It had some great scenes, and some impressive scenes, but again the super-low budget for this high-budget film just did Not compliment the vision here. As much as you might like this film, the directors and their story with The Thing, or anything else, it is just, ultimately, a Bad B-film. I'd say this could get a remake, not that the actors were particularly bad or anything, but the effects, the cinematography, framing, directing, and Especially the main 2 lead actors, Collums and Balsamo (sounds like a fancy salad dressing) were HORRIBLE! Some of the Worst acting and actors I've Ever seen! They were dry, bland, awful, stupid, confused, and most importantly Did Not Portray Their Roles. They were So bad, it would single-handedly bury this film into the bargain bin that Noone would search for. If they were cut completely, and replaced by Any of the other cast that all did a fine job overall, it would probably earn back a Full star, or more. Miserable performance by them, and a great example of the 1%er kids getting jobs just because without merit or ability. A million short, and 2 bad actors from the favor bin, makes this film a mediocre film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member even with pretty shitty script and mediocre supporting cast, nice try though. Joe Leydon Variety Ranks somewhere between self-consciously cheesy SyFy Channel fare and better-than-average direct-to-video product. Aug 7, 2015 Full Review MaryAnn Johanson Flick Filosopher Bad acting and atrocious dialogue is topped only by the cheap shoddiness of the practical FX this demo-reel flick is meant to show off. Better they'd remained unseen. Nov 10, 2020 Full Review Brad Miska Bloody Disgusting I really wanted to like Harbinger Down, but felt burned out by the end credits. It's a bleak, tiring and vanilla creature feature that's sadly forgettable. I don't recommend going down with the ship. Apr 7, 2017 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed A really solid and above average debut from Alec Gillis. Aug 13, 2015 Full Review Scott Weinberg Nerdist Simplistic and obvious, but it also does a fine job of emulating the late-'80s monster movies we all know and love. Aug 13, 2015 Full Review Matt Donato We Got This Covered Harbinger Down brings the monstrous goods as expect, yet struggles to tell a coherent story that's worth the practical effects success.
