Mike M The shorts seem gentler without sound - you don't hear Ollie's cries of distress as he steps on a drawing pin for the second time - the violence funnier: take Stan's instinctive reactions, which ensure anyone who takes a pop at him gets a fist right back in the maw, and later that an unwitting dentist receives a knee to the b******s. And the interpersonal business is unfailingly sweet: Ollie carrying Stan and putting him to bed, and the pair of them high on laughing gas - united against the world, even when, in a final gag recycled in "Perfect Day" twelve months later, they found themselves up to their necks in s**t.
