There are a couple so-so songs (“Specialization” is the worst song I’ve heard in a musical ever). Montand has zero chemistry with Monroe. Monroe is always bringing her best - but she can’t save this mish-mosh of randomness. It feels like someone took 10 songs that got cut from 10 musicals and said “let’s throw them into one movie.” “But how will it make sense?” “We’ll do the ‘show-within-a-show’ premise.” Monroe is an actress cast in a satire, who thinks Montand was hired because of his uncanny resemblance to a wealthy businessman they will spoof in the show (in fact - surprise - he is the businessman). He falls in love with Monroe and is happy to play the part of the starving actor, enjoying that she seems to like him for himself. But that only takes us so far. The chemistry is ZERO with these two. Even Monroe’s bedroom eyes look bored and Montand is so awkward he’s literally eating her hair during one ‘seduction’ scene. Unfortunately, Monroe’s over-bleached hair was so teased and straw-like throughout, she looked like she just tumbled out of bed (not in the good way). Tony Randall can play opposite a brown paper bag and make it funny, and the rest of the cast is really well done - but it feels like they are all on a sinking ship that is getting lower and lower. And I can’t over-emphasize the ridiculousness of “Specialization.” Ugh. Why was Montand cast? Did someone owe him money? Maybe his brother-in-law wrote the songs . . . This is an enjoyable movie from start to finish. Lot's of backstage drama in this backstage musical and Marilyn Monroe singing and dancing in a few numbers. Milton Berle, Bing Crosby, and Gene Kelly all have cameos.
