What to Know

Critics Consensus

A competent debut from writer/director/actress Maneka Das. Shame its a little too sugar coated, coming across like a daytime TV soap.

Derek Malcolm London Evening Standard If it lacks the power of real drama, or a radical sense of style, it doesn't stint on the difficulties a peasant girl probably still faces when getting on in life. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2008 Full Review Cath Clarke Guardian Meneka Das, a British-based Indian actor, has written and directed a love story that is polite, proper and just a little flat-footed, although beautifully shot in Uttar Pradesh. Rated: 2/5 Aug 15, 2008 Full Review Wendy Ide Times (UK) Sugar-coated and naive, Little Box of Sweets is an Indian coming-of-age story that feels firmly mired in the colonial melodrama of the Merchant Ivory era. Rated: 2/5 Aug 15, 2008 Full Review Rob Daniel Sky Cinema An enjoyable debut for two disgustingly talented sisters, on the basis of this Meneka and Sheenu Das deserve a long future as that rarest of beasts - a female filmmaking duo. Aug 15, 2008 Full Review Tom Dawson Film4 A promising first feature from Das, the low-key Little Box Of Sweets returns to the filmmaker's rural Indian past to offer an atmospheric evocation of a particular time and place. Audience Member here began my love affair with joe anderson.. :) what a beautiful boy. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Mike M A very handsome piece, with a strain of authentic, dust-blown poetry in its imagemaking that proves hard to deny or resist, but never quite as assured in its plot or character development as it needs to be; Anderson, so ebullient in "Across the Universe" and "Control", is oddly wan and soporific here, as though the heat had sapped him of all energy or colour. Still, there's definite promise behind the camera - and there aren't all that many female directors at large within the non-Bollywood Indian cinema. With perseverance, the right support and an even slightly better script, Das could well have the field to herself. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 08/12/08 Full Review Audience Member My attachment to this movie cannot be explained. It's probably because of my adoration for one: Joe Anderson. His acting ability absolutely astounds me. He's one of the few new actors who just seems so comfortable on the camera. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Read all reviews
