When aging French businessman Simon Leotard (Michel Piccoli) is faced with financial woes due to the debts and subsequent suicide of his partner, Julien (Bernard Fresson), he struggles to improve his grim situation. Soon Leotard has to contend with Lepidon (Julien Guiomar), an opportunistic rival, and he comes to realize that the beautiful prostitute, Mado (Ottavia Piccolo), may present an ideal way out of his bind. His scheme, however, is not going to go easily.
