After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calls for a sacrifice.

H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos has long been one of King's guiding influences, and Frank Darabont's adaptation of The Mist honors that relationship while also working as a 21st-century political parable. Go to Full Review

[This] grocery-store survival drama, dominated by Marcia Gay Harden as a shrill fundamentalist, serves as a crude but effective allegory for post-9/11 America. Go to Full Review

There is the obvious threat of what lies in the mist, but the story delves into several different sources of dread, such as fear itself, superstition, mistrust, and helplessness. Go to Full Review

See more Evan F. @evanforeverworried Nov 3 when someone tells me they enjoy horror movies, this is of my favorite movies to tell people to watch. i always get a kick out of someone who contacts me after watching the movie, they say “why would you make me watch that”? the effects are not good. it’s from the 00s so cut it some slack with that. the acting is between not bad and fine. i will say, it kept me on the edge of my seat. it was easy to hypothetically insert myself into such a terrifying situation. if you haven’t had the ending spoiled for you, you’re in for a treat. it’s the only movie where my friend and i sat in silence for the duration of the end credits scene, unable to speak. stephen king himself said he prefers darabont’s ending. i have read the book and i liked the book ending as well, but for a different reason. it was open ended and made me pine for answers with a sadness of not knowing how the characters ended up. a wistfulness and hopelessness of not knowing. darabont’s ending turned the mist from a movie nobody would’ve watched to something that goes through the movie discussion grapevine as a must watch. not the greatest movie of all time, but the ending is what makes it truly memorable.
