DanTheMan 2 One part ET, another part Indiana Jones but a Wong Jing movie in every other sense, Magic Crystal has everything and the kitchen sink cheesed up to the max, but dosed on adrenalin too. Wong Jing's signature chaotic direction, balls-to-the-wall pace, brutal stunt work, cheesy yet ridiculously charming effects and humour that ranges from childish to outright offensive but it's presented in such a way that it remains hilarious. Topped off by an incredible cast that includes the likes of Andy Lau, Cynthia Rothrock and an awesomely villainous Richard Norton all of whom commit 100% to the film's stupidity. It's over the top and knows it, delivering endless, ferocious and well-choreographed action all set to a rocking synth score that has become a staple of most 80s Hong Kong movies. Daft, dumb and oh-so-fun, Magic Crystal is one you owe yourself to watch if you are in any way a fan of shlocky excellence. Then again I also gave 5 stars to Future Cops... so you decide. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review William D Really good action movie. Really worth the watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/24/23 Full Review Matthew D A great mixture of martial arts action, campy comedy and bizarre fantasy. Cynthia Rothrock does so many amazing fights and stunts, you'd never know that she was nursing an injured knee when this was being filmed. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/23/20 Full Review Audience Member A rare and interesting movie. First and foremost, it's a family picture that's highly kid-friendly due to the role of the child that befriends an alien in the guise of a jade rock. If that's all you know about it, it works on that level as a cheap action movie for kids.

But here's where it gets interesting. This is Wong Jing's first movie and he co-stars as well. Here's where it gets mind-blowing. He does a great job at both. This may have led to other successful movies like God of Gamblers which assured his powerful presence in HK movies for life, even though he quickly became the biggest self-assured hack in the business -- sort of reminds you of the early success of M. Night Shyamalan.

That's not all. In her second film role, we have Cynthia Rothrock as well as Richard Norton (fresh off their appearance in Sammo Hung's Millionaire's Express) and they ignite the screen every second, especially Cynthia who will blow your mind with her weapons and Shaolin form demonstration. This movie needed a lot more of these two and a little less ridiculous alien plot, but that's just me.

Starring in the movie is a baby-faced Andy Lau (the modern equivalent of a young Justin Timberlake in the role of a Bruce Lee/James Bond) who does one hell of an amazing job in his fight close ups, and whoever is doing his main stunt action is a damn superhero for real, man. You also get a super young Max Mok who also surprises with his fighting.

The action is by Tony Leung Siu-Hung who isn't as well known as some choreographers but he is now for doing the choreography on Ip Man. Well he does an insanely good job on this movie.

Summary: this is a super-charged 80's movie with a Goonies/E.T. vibe going on, but made in Hong Kong with tons of great fights, special FX, and Wong Jing hijinx that's not omni-present so it actually is good. It's not the best movie. In fact it's pretty retarded. But the 80's-ness gives it a charm and it's got something for everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Andy Lau de jovenzuelo en una peli típica de artes marciales. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Good 80's action/fantasy movie. And there are Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton as good and bad character. It is about a boy who found a magic crystal and the bad guys wants it for their evil use. Cynthia is really the top woman fighter! Andy Lau not bad in this action fighting scenes as well.
