What to Know

Critics Consensus

European Vacation charts a course through a succession of pretty destinations, but the journey itself lacks the laughs that made the original outing so memorable.

Sheila Benson Los Angeles Times The film spares us no stereotypes. Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Time Out Staff Time Out Overall, it's not quite funny or memorable enough. Rated: 3/5 Aug 13, 2020 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Broad, sketchlike, and arbitrarily assembled, Amy Heckerling's 1985 film fritters away the considerable credit of relative psychological realism and dramatically consistent situations built up by its predecessor... juan c Very Hilarious Sequel to the 1st One 😅😅but the rating was wrong in my opinion this is rated R & the 1st one PG-13 because it shows more breast nudity & language..The 1st is good but this is more hilarious 😅😅 need to pay more attention on the rating .. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review mark g This movie was awful. Lacked writing, supporting cast, everything. I know some people will knock it because in comparison to the original it fell off so dramatically, this is true. However, even if there was no first one, this movie would absolutely suck. Awful, just awful. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Daniel M Caught it on TV and it was nostalgic watching it after so many years Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/24 Full Review Dinos K the first movie was very funny but this sequel didn't make me laugh except for very few moments. Please, don't make another one Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Blu B It's not the funniest thing in the world and it's defintely a let down from the first one but it has some good things about it. The acting, music, and cinematography isn't bad. Chevy Chase is the best thing in this and still has that goofy likeability from the first and everyone else is half decent. The central problem of all of it is this just isn't as funny compared to the first, not even clsoe. Lots of jokes just fall flat or over my head sometimes even. It does help though it is interesting to look at because of all the different locations which are memorable. It's got a lot of variety but it doesn't really meld together for anything special or funny. Another big culprit is the editing which isn't that good. In the first they wanted to get to Wally World, here it feels like there really isn't any particular end goal and it feels like they're just wandering kind of aimlessly at times. It feels like jokes and stuff just happens with no particular plot to unite them all behind which is quite shocking considering this is a John Hughes script in his prime. This does have a ok pacing at least. Honestly, there isn't enough here to laugh at or recommend especially compared to the other entries of this franchise. Skip This and just watch 1 & 3. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/01/24 Full Review Jeff M On the surface, the NATIONAL LAMPOON VACATION movies exemplify everything I tend to despise in modern American comedy. But the Griswolds are such an ingratiating family with an underlying sweetness and love for one another, well, they kinda melt my heart. They are indeed one of my most guilty of guilty pleasures. EUROPEAN VACATION is generally considered the shaggy dog of the series, and that's one of the reasons why I tend to find it the most endearing. True, much of the comedy is lame and uninspired, and frankly there aren't a whole lot of laughs, but I am thoroughly entertained each time I watch it. The opening scene is easily the movie's best featuring a game show hosted by John Astin basically playing Richard Dawson in heat. Chase is not an actor I generally like, but Clark Griswold is his crowning achievement, and it's easy to underappreciate D'Angelo who has some of her best moments of the whole series in this movie. Hill is also my favorite Audrey of the whole series. Hill was a promising actress who sadly died at only 32 due to complications from diabetes. It's fruitless to attempt justifying my high star rating for this comedy - it just hits my sweet spot. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
