Anton Bitel Sight & Sound in this no-budget labour of love the banal, quotidian details of one man's life are both wryly observed & subjected to a hilariously wrong type of external manipulation, with the manipulator slowly coming into focus as the one with the real problems Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Andrew Stover Film Inquiry In Nothing Really Happens, things do happen: characters have personal encounters, stakes are clearly drawn and there's sensibility in the endless haze of perplexity. Aug 8, 2019 Full Review Raquel Stecher Quelle Movies a quirky, offbeat film... serves as a metaphysical exploration of how disconnected we are as a society. Aug 6, 2019 Full Review Paul Parcellin Film Threat Can all of this be tied together into something that makes sense? For the most part it does. Nothing Really Happens finally coheres into a story - if you stay with it. Rated: 6/10 Mar 12, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I thought I could kinda see what this wanted to be for about the first half or so: a take off on or attempt at a 90's indie flick with oddballs in odd places, all quirky but 'real', while odd things happen; with some mild attempt at commenting on social norms or general urban culture. Some such twaddle as that. And it is, but it goes on its own wacky journey, too. It's like amateur Linklater, Kevin Smith & early Peter Jackson or something. No, this is NOT Kauffman/Being John Malkovich or ESOTSM level or even close. Either way, I didn't find what semblance of a story there is interesting enough to make up for all the glaring issues with the movie, not the least of which is its overt lack of any real change or development in any character. Yeah, Dave does punch Randy, but he went right back to being the same weak, clueless loser he was before, staring off into space. It's pretty funny at times, but again, not enough. Is it a comedy? Is it a 'head trip' movie just for stoners & the like? This is the kind of movie that can make a big impression on the easily impressed. Take that as you will. 2.2 stars Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member For a no-budget indie, it sufficed. You'll lose your patience with it halfway through, then the payoff is not as interesting as you'd have hoped. It also depends on the "idiot plot" -- its only conceivable because the protagonist David is, well, such a loser and has three weird/disconnected friends/acquaintances/spouse/brother-in-law. And the ultimate antagonist is so completely nuts that he makes a loser look sympathetic. But the characters are intriguing and nicely acted by nobodies, and if you can make it past the first two-thirds, the "aha" moment will take you to the (not totally satisfying) conclusion. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I was positively surprised by Nothing Really Happens! So intriguing and well paced. The acting is very good, the way the main character is overwhelmed by the bizarre stuff going on in his life works total in setting the mystery in which they plunge the spectator. A fresh concept, a clever although complex script and a very interesting and original way of making movies. The style, the pace, a great deal of dark humour and cynicism. At times it kind of remined me of The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind but with a very unique touch. Good job! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Nothing Really Happens is one of the strangest films I've seen in a long time. Expect nothing, lean back and simply enjoy. The actors are brilliant in taking you on a weird, startling and hilarious journey full of unexpected twists. You'll love it or you'll hate it. I loved it :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member This surreal indie is one full of heart and clear direction. Some of the scene are actually quite funny in a weird "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" kinda way. Actually now that I think of this is does have a similar tone to that movie but more surreal. They take a lot of camera risks and this is a great w film for indie filmmakers to see to see some of this ricks in action. I love the surreal take on the world and were that takes the camera work visually. Kudos! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member As a big fan of existential philosophy and all things absurd, this was pure gold! It had the feel of Charlie Kaufman's Adaptation and Being John Malkovich blended with elements of Donnie Darko minus the recognizable name talent. Characters grappling with life's biggest issues and the most ridiculous of ways. Lots of laughs and lots to think about here. Great flick! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
