Ard Vijn ScreenAnarchy So all in all it's a flawed but nice thriller. It may not hit all the goals it wanted to achieve, but at the same time it's not pretentious either, and as pure entertainment it's difficult to find faults with this. Jan 24, 2020 Full Review Read all reviews

jesse o I like this movie's concept. A severed head washes up on this shore and the calls are called to come to this remote island with only 17 inhabitants on it. But once the cops find their way to the island, they see that all of the inhabitants have disappeared and the mystery is finding out what happened to them. I really was more intrigued by the mystery and that's why I decided to watch it, to see how they would go around solving it. And, honestly speaking, your enjoyment of the film will really come from whether or not you enjoyed how they solved the mystery. Not that the film doesn't have its moments prior to how it's solved. I liked the paranoia and fear shared throughout the village as the murders keep taking place and how they keep suspecting each other despite the lack of any real evidence. I thought that was all good and well, but there's parts of the movie that aren't great. Like, for example, I thought the story progression wasn't as interesting as one might have imagined given the disappearance of all the island's inhabitants. They spend way too much time focusing on this poker game and this money that the mayor brought in that people in the island believe led to the murders that have been occurring. Of course, this is all a red herring as it isn't as simple as that, but I still do think they spend a lot of time on this and it gets a little boring. And they never even reveal what the money that the mayor brought in was even for, you're left to guessing and, honestly, I didn't really care that much to try and guess what the money was for. Films like this usually have several red herrings to keep you guessing, but this one is all centered around this poker game and the money the mayor brought in, which the inhabitants believe was for the game anyway. So I thought that was a problem, I feel like they should've explored various possibilities in order to keep the film from feeling stale or uninteresting, but it is what it is. The acting is pretty solid, but there's some annoyances here and there. Like there's this guy, Choon-bae, the drunk, that is so annoying in some parts of the film where he has to raise his voice that I just wanted to go through the TV and smack him right in the face as hard as I possibly could. And the thing is that the actor who plays this guy is actually good, it's just that he was extremely annoying. Everyone else is pretty good, nothing to really write home about though. I don't know how to feel about the reveal of what was actually happening to all of the inhabitants. Part of me think that it was good and part of me thinks that it's a bit of a convenient way to solve everything. Perhaps convenient isn't the right word to describe it, it does make sense within its context as there are hints about it, but it still feels like it's completely separated from the rest of the film and not necessarily an organic conclusion to this story. At least it's not as non-sensical as some of M. Night Shyamalan's twists. Honestly, this was kind of a disappointing movie, the story progression is lacking and the mystery just isn't that interesting to follow. The movie isn't bad, it's only average at best, but it's on the low end of average. Watched on Amazon Prime, so I can't really complain much, but it's not like I'd go out of my way to recommend this. Banane. knappe 2,5/5 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Very fun and entertaining murder mystery with some surprising violence (which shouldn't be that surprising considering it comes from South Korea). The plot gets pretty ridiculous at times, but it's forgivable since it's such an enjoyable flick.
