Eustace McGargle (W.C. Fields) is a bred-in-the-bone schemer whose latest con is set to bring him a fortune -- if he can beat the competition. After blowing into Green Meadows with the traveling carnival, McGargle discovers a fake countess who claims to be heir to the Putnam family fortune. Aided by a crooked lawyer, McGargle installs his adopted daughter, Poppy (Rochelle Hudson), as the true heir, which throws a wrench into her budding romance with local boy Billy Farnsworth (Richard Cromwell).

Meyer Levin (Patterson Murphy) Esquire Magazine W. C. Fields is swell but if he doesn't get some new stunts pretty soon they'll be saying he was over-rated. Apr 23, 2020 Full Review Ann Ross Maclean's Magazine There is romance, involving Rochelle Hudson, but it is W. C. Fields who makes the picture worth seeing. Aug 8, 2019 Full Review Graham Greene The Spectator The story doesn't really matter, for Mr. Fields has never acted better. Jun 3, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member The best movie quote ever spoken: "Never give a sucker an even break." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This is the fourth or fifth film I have seen of classic comedian W. Fields that I can honestly now say he is a dreadfully unfunny comedian. This film's narrative is solid since it is based on a successful Broadway played also called Poppy. But the humor is very labored. The plot is enjoyable enough and running at 73 minutes it's not too hard to sit through. Will be enjoyable if you appreciate the Hollywood Studio films from the 1930's. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Definitely not the best Fields movie, as the gags are pretty average and the love story without Fields taking the center stage. Movies like "Bank Dick" "Million Dollar Legs" or "Mississippi" are better choices to see Fields at his best. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Read all reviews
