Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC Radio (Australia) Taut, compelling and with just the right scale and intensity to keep us engrossed without ever going too far over the top and collapsing into camp. av 8 There were about 10 to 15 minutes in the plot where Chloe gets so worked up about the green pills with a grey cap that her mom was administering to her. Following recent arousal of suspicion in Diane's behaviour, Chloe decides to search for the pills on the internet. She peels off the fake sticker on the bottle of pills, having her name on the top, but secretly and originally being a prescription under Diane's name for their dog. But the irony is that she peels it off only halfway through, whereby it is revealed with certainty that Diane is passing off those pills under some fabrication. She genuinely could not afford to peel off the entire sticker to reveal the name of the medicine first-hand (as was visible before Diane put the phoney one over it). Since the internet was down, Chloe (almost) rings the pharmacy, 911, as well as another pharmacy through an operator. After a tremendous amount of hassle and dealing with a stranger, she finally unravels the mystery of the pills! They were not what they said on the fake label, voila! All that aside, the plot is fast-paced and rather hooking, with a handful full of surprises. It kept me guessing, and I am happy that I was not always correct. The climax is an adrenaline rush. Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen deliver the characters impeccably with no room for any criticism. There is nothing exceptional about the script or the cinematography. However, the background score music has greatly amplified the impression this story leaves in your mind. As much as I loved the ending, I also disdain it. Maybe Chloe was served justice, but was the vengeance up to the mark? Is it not concerning that she chose to revel in punishing her mom by going down a subtly psychopathic road? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Nicholas B Wholly unoriginal but mostly well executed and acted. It's also thankfully short, and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's fair to say there are definitely worse ways to burn 90mins; but then again, it's even more so the case that there are much better ways too. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Stoner J Just as compelling as Chaganty’s previous Searching, but more thrilling. Great movie Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review Jeffrey P It doesn’t reinvent the genre or offer any thing new, but it manages to captivate and entertain. Fans of horror should be able to find enough to enjoy with there being similarities to many other films of the genre. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Dylanimus K I have no clue what the other critics are talking about by giving this movie such a high rating... It is baffling to the mind. I figured out the plot and conclusion of the movie within its first two minutes! I am not even exaggerating, it is that predictable. The actors are fine but the writing, pace and overall plot are horribly contrived, predictable and boring!!! The script gives away wayyyy too much from the get go and it is outed so early that its hard to elevate the stakes so early in the film. In fact, it is so bad that I think maybe there was a miscommunication in the post-editing portion because the lead gets upset about something later in the film that should be considered trivial in comparison to other more intense occurences that happen earlier. Many things happen in the movie that illogical and only happen because the script said so. Instead of finding more imaginative ways of demonstrating how or why something occurs it simply just happens as a what a coincidence moment. The movie is comparable to the classic Misery in terms of its overall plot but is soooooooo bad in every other aspect in its execution. There is no pace, no mystery. You can figure it out within the first few scenes. Trust me, save yourself the time and just watch misery with Kathy Bates.
