Derek Adams Time Out Characterisation is regulation thin, plotting largely nonsensical, 'camerawork' and effects increasingly pyrotechnical until an amazing final light show inside the Ark. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Jay Hardwig Austin Chronicle This animated 1998 actioner about a Japanese superspy out to defend the world's most guarded archaeological secrets from evil Americans has to be seen to be believed. Rated: 3/5 Mar 11, 2003 Full Review Chris Vognar Dallas Morning News Much of Spriggan feels like an apocalyptic Arnold Schwarzenegger cartoon, with lots of automatic gunfire, rivers of blood and dialogue that could have been written by a theologically inclined 11-year-old with a thing for explosions. Audience Member While the anime is in its base for a good action sci-fi show, there are a lot of plot issues. From poor logic in some of the fight scenes, random character introductions, and bonkers writing, its an overall good burn of time as white noise if you are doing something else while listening/glancing at it. However, a big complaint i have is their portrayal of the US military. Many of the actions they show the US military do are flat out illegal actions. If any of the actions shown in this show were done, there would be massive international repercussions and global war. Granted this may be fiction, but at least keep things somewhat realistic when it comes to military reasoning. Corporations dont control the military, nor do military personnel take orders from corporations. Navy ships dont just randomly attack a civilian ship. Not to mention US and Japan are allies, so there are laws preventing the military from acting on allies soil. Some people take these animes as partial truth to fact on how peoples are depicted, and the depiction in this anime about foreign countries is pretty bonkers. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Late R Whilst the premise has some interesting elements and the animation is pretty nice, something that's especially apparent during the thrilling action sequences where the film shines, overall, it does feel like its reach exceeds its grasp considerably. The story is just too scattered and it doesn't do a good job of making sense of things, nor are the characters or their dialogue well-written (the main villain is particularly stupid and inexplicable) leading them to feel incredibly thin and one-dimensional. In the end, it feels quite pointless and you realise they couldn't make you care for anything or anyone. Still, if you're going to watch this, do it for the action sequences which, thankfully, are fairly numerous. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/02/18 Full Review Audience Member Nostalgia and awesomeness rolled into one. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member A sci fi/fantasy/action thrill ride that is brutal and intense to the very core. It gets a little iffy toward the end, but ultimately proves to be satisfying. It has an interesting story to top it all off. Some people will be thrown off by the more bizarre elements, but for those who stick out will find this one to be just awesome. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Classic. Must watch for anyone who fancies themselves an fan of Anime. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Having a feel similar to Akira, Spriggan is one of my fave animes of the 90s. Combining religion, action, scifi and standard anime craziness, Spriggan delivers a fun watch. The film does allow for plenty of mild theological discussion but doesn't get too complex and allows itself to be understood while many of the most popular anime, simply don't make much sense once they start trying to "think" too hard. The animation is fantastic and I really enjoyed the score. This is classic 90s anime but it's often overshadowed by films like Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll.
