Keith Uhlich Time Out It's safe to say that [Barney's] schweddy balls have no conceptual limits. Rated: 2/5 Nov 5, 2021 Full Review Nathan Lee Village Voice Matthew Barney's humongous riff on struggle, reproduction, conceptual drag, and several dozen strands of narrative gobbledygook is undeniably something to be reckoned with--if only as a relic of the boom years in contemporary art. May 19, 2010 Full Review Kaleem Aftab The List Fear not, you really don't have to watch all five of these crazy films, or to even see them in order, to appreciate the brilliance and madness of Barney's creation. Apr 17, 2019 Full Review David N. Butterworth rec.arts.movies.reviews Matthew Barney makes Peter Greenaway look like Joel Schumacher. Rated: 3.5/4 Sep 16, 2015 Full Review Richard Knight Knight at the Movies Undeniably the work of a unique artistic vision. Nov 3, 2010 Full Review Ian Buckwalter DCist It's too easy (and inaccurate) to write these films off as willfully opaque art world pretension. This is challenging, formally audacious, uneven, and sometimes confounding work - as ambitious an undertaking for the viewer as it was for its creator. Private U Horribly pretentious and does not deserve the attention of a single view. Matthew Barney is the biggest troll when it comes to filmmaking. Calling this man a "filmmaker" is an insult to every other filmmaker by association. Watch his interviews and read up on his introduction to movie making - he's such a phony and he's playing every one who watches films claiming themselves to be connoisseurs and lovers of avant-garde cinema. It's obscure and provocative for the sake of seeing how much garbage the upper echelon of film-watchers can ingest while still giving their approval. The price tag associated with owning this collection of motion-pictured-crap is even more offensive. Matthew Barney deserves a swift quick to the cremaster for this. I give this film a rating of 0.
