Simran Hans Observer (UK) Hancock's bland biopic offers a sanitised and sympathetic take on the burger chain's beginnings and the man who turned it into a multimillion-dollar enterprise. Rated: 2/5 Feb 19, 2017 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times One of the many pleasures in John Lee Hancock's study of the man who made McDonald's an empire is its reminder that even the simplest ideas need to be invented. Rated: 4/5 Feb 17, 2017 Full Review Ed Potton Times (UK) The man, played with dark relish by Michael Keaton, has the fabulous name of Ray Kroc (there is a suitably reptilian air to his grin as he says things such as: "Contracts are like hearts. They're made to be broken"). Rated: 3/5 Feb 16, 2017 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film This is definitely a film to watch – not only as a real “eye-opener” into the success of the world’s most recognisable fast-food chain, but also for Keaton’s dedicated and enthusiastic performance. Rated: 4/5 Aug 12, 2024 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Everything is Horrible (Substack) John Lee Hancock's The Founder is the perfect movie for a country that has just chosen a vapid brand for its chief executive. Apr 6, 2023 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine Thanks to a strong, character-focused script by Robert Siegel (The Wrestler) and engaging performances across the board, it all turns out to be pretty riveting stuff. SkyRo P "The Founder" is a compelling film that chronicles the rise of the McDonald’s empire. Featuring Michael Keaton in the lead role, the movie delves into the complex journey of its protagonist as he navigates the restaurant industry to establish a thriving chain aligned with his vision of fast food. The narrative showcases Keaton's character as he cleverly manipulates the original concept of McDonald’s, which was founded by the McDonald brothers, who envisioned a clean and family-friendly dining experience. However, as Keaton's character expands the franchise, the essence of the original vision becomes distorted, transforming McDonald’s into a global sensation that sometimes sacrifices cleanliness and quality for profit. Overall, I found "The Founder" to be an engaging business film that offers valuable insights into the history of one of the most recognizable brands in the world. It’s an entertaining watch and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone interested in the intricacies of business development and entrepreneurship. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Tyler S Definitely a solid movie. Really was just scrolling on Netflix and thought this was interesting. There were a few moments that felt a little choppy but I got by. I also thought parts of the story moved a bit quick but it was still fine. Overall, not bad. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/25 Full Review Josh D I won’t go into too much detail as to what happens, but the movie’s incredible writing manages to make it feel like a success story and a tragedy at the same time. Michael Keaton gives an an incredible performance as the film’s lead. His performance and the events shown in the film are, from what I understand, very accurate to the real events, with a few minor changes (as with any historical film). My only real complaint with the movie is that it’s a little difficult to watch, because if you’ve seen a McDonalds you know that it’s not going to end the way you hope it will. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/28/25 Full Review Samuel W Often disputed if this is the true side of the story or not, it is still a heartbreaking reality to watch the work of the MacDonald Brothers be trampled on in such a fashion and then turn out to be one of the biggest financial successes of all of history. With great acting, amazing foreshadowing and details, and a knack of telling a comprehensive, boring story in an exciting and thrilling way, Michael Keaton stands tall as the hateable Ray Kroc, and Nick Offerman, BJ Novak, Linda Cardallini, and John Carroll Lynch supports him marvelously with their acting that only fueled the aggression from Kroc and my hate toward the so-called “Founder” of McDonald's. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Kevin P A cynical, but witty biopic about Ray Kroc's revolutionizing the fast-food industry at the cost of the actual founders of McDonalds and their integrity. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Luca B One of Michael Keaton Douglas's best and easily the best that I've seen him in any role ever. We are so used to seeing him in supernatural films, that we never get a realistic acting-side view of him. The way how we manipulates people, including Mac and Dick McDonald, was just heart-racing. He's incredible and this movie/story is so well-told. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews
