      Brittany B Dialogue is written at the level of a 100-level literature course; it slows things down and painfully so. Many indoor scenes lit like a department store, not a centuries-old rectory. Some costumes are painfully anachronistic in style and cut. Direction is….fine. There's some community theatre-level performances, but there's a handful of decent ones; the actor who played Price is adept enough to keep you watching. Director Steven Smith's squashy fisted approach manages to leach any tension or suspense out of an already boggy script. The actors respond to the ailing direction with listless bewilderment as they chew on the lumpen dialogue as if it were wet toilet paper. The real question is how this film was made in the first place, given how little those involved with the production seem to care. Firstly, the acting is exceptional, Harry Price is brilliant as are Julian Sands, Colin Baker, Christopher Ellison and the fabulous Toyah Willcox as Estelle Roberts. Secondly it has some genuine scare moments and a sense of seclusion. It centres around Harry Price's stay in the semi derelict Borley Rectory in 1937. It certainly plays out like a TV film and is really great for the zero budget they must of had. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review the s It's not that this is a bad movie, it's that the plot is just really very mediocre. And it rings every cliche bell that can be rung. The maggots on the food, the lantern that blows our, the spooky nun with gouged out eyeballs. Pacing is slow…too slow. I'm not sure how much of this is based on Price's actual writings but surely it could have been made to have more suspense, more chills and some taste of horror. Wynn-Davies' depiction of Price proves to be the strongest part of the film. He delivers a solid performance to what is simply an underwhelming script. It's interesting to me that similar movies have been made that literally provide a blueprint for what works and those seem to be ignored by the writers. The Haunting (1963) was the perfect example of a subtlety horrifying haunted house investigation movie. If subtlety is what they were going for or the so-called slow burn, it can be done if the right story and dialogue are in place. Have the wrong ones in place and you just end up with a boring snooze fest shot in an impressive set with some decent acting. 1995's "Haunted" is also a great example of a well-done haunted house investigation movie that managed to be subtle and still scary.
