Critics Consensus

Emily Blunt's outstanding performance isn't enough to keep The Girl on the Train from sliding sluggishly into exploitative melodrama.

Sarah Marshall Bitch Media When Emily Blunt is onscreen, it's impossible to look away. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint If not for Blunt's fantastic performance, the film would have come across as a quickie capitalizing on the novel's popularity. As far as thrillers go,Girl on the Train works hard to make every player seem suspicious but the result isn't as juicy... Jul 31, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Though never devolving into the levels of camp, The Girl on the Train presents itself as Gone Girl's trashier, but funner sister. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Joe Lipsett Anatomy of a Scream Podcast Network Blunt does her best to elevate the material, but dividing the film's focus between three different women (and all of their men) means no one has an opportunity to develop a fully formed character. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Apart from the film's acting, fans of the source material should ignore the adaptation and preserve their imagination's picture of Hawkins' novel. Rated: 2/4 Apr 9, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The herrings in The Girl on the Train might be the usual shade of robust red, but the film itself is largely a bloodless affair, not so much a whodunit as a wellobviouslythatpersondunit. Twiggy H A well put together murder mystery - at first, seems quite scrambled and messy, but is apparent was intentional to the plot of the story. Just enough to delay the 'yep, i was right' about that 'tom' character. As much as i dislike guys of that sort, i only continued to watch the film on the pure basis of it focusing on the main female characters, even though the initial portrayal of all three women was bullshit but i guess that was the 'bullshit' filter for the audience to see what each women were having to deal with throughout the story before the overall reveal. One thing that does annoy me though, is how the story seems to frequent the characters accessing one another's emails etc - it certainly is not a regular thing. And though the 'scot' character wasn't an abusive husband, it was correct to at least point out that excessing someone else's account is strictly a 'no-no'. Also, i strongly dislike the pretty girl saying a completely stupid and incorrect thing - abuse is NOT sexy, and to have added that in the film was sooooo tacky. This one is one of my all time favorites. The plot is intriguing, characters are interesting and the ending is incredibly satisfying. If you loved this movie watch the film Shrooms. It drags so many scenes out and feels over the top and unneeded throughout. This is about 65% Drama and 35% Thriller and it should have been the opposite. The acting is ok. Blunt is good and the best thing in this but her character isn't that likeable and comes across as a drama queen more than being sympathetic or a wrongly accused character you can relate too. Everyone else is just ok also and no one is really that likeable either. The cinematography isn't that good either. It's very boring and dreary to look at. The camerawork is good and well framed but so many scenes are over the top drama or honestly not very clear what or how it relates to the love triangle because it focuses more on the drama than telling a good thriller like i wants too. This falls to the editing which feels unfocused from a tone perspective. It feels like because the drama is so over the top i doesn't tell the mystery that well and feels jumbled. I get the main twist but the details of it I got lost with. It makes sense but still the stuff with the shrink and all I don't get how that fits to the husband being a dick. And this all leads to a very VERY draggy pacing the entire time. I swear when we hit 50 minutes it felt like I'd been watching for almost 2 hours. It's because the lifeless cinematography, over the top drama, unlikeable characters, and boring dreary soundtrack all just become like a pile of sludge. And the train thing barely works into the plot outside the opening scene. Unless your a DIE HARD Emily Blunt fan most people should skip this. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 04/25/24 Full Review Lydia K I have no idea why the reviews of this movie are so harsh – it's intriguing the whole way through with some very decent shocks throughout.
