Critics Consensus

Emily Blunt's outstanding performance isn't enough to keep The Girl on the Train from sliding sluggishly into exploitative melodrama.

Sarah Marshall Bitch Media When Emily Blunt is onscreen, it's impossible to look away. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint If not for Blunt's fantastic performance, the film would have come across as a quickie capitalizing on the novel's popularity. As far as thrillers go,Girl on the Train works hard to make every player seem suspicious but the result isn't as juicy... Jul 31, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Though never devolving into the levels of camp, The Girl on the Train presents itself as Gone Girl's trashier, but funner sister. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Joe Lipsett Anatomy of a Scream Podcast Network Blunt does her best to elevate the material, but dividing the film's focus between three different women (and all of their men) means no one has an opportunity to develop a fully formed character. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Apart from the film's acting, fans of the source material should ignore the adaptation and preserve their imagination's picture of Hawkins' novel. Rated: 2/4 Apr 9, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The herrings in The Girl on the Train might be the usual shade of robust red, but the film itself is largely a bloodless affair, not so much a whodunit as a wellobviouslythatpersondunit. Ryan H Can’t remember a bit of it - couldn’t have been that good Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/25 Full Review Audience Member Quizzical lackluster reception. Blunt is great in anything and the story was cool. It was a bit disjointed in it's delivery but overall I thought it a great movie and I'm keeping it for my collection. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/14/25 Full Review Blanka P I absolutely loved the book, I couldn’t put it down. The movie, on the other hand, was just okay if you haven’t read the book. But honestly, I felt that without having read it first, I wouldn’t have understood what was going on at all. It was so confusing! I really didn’t like that they changed and left out so many important details. And changing the entire setting from the London suburbs to New York? That just didn’t make sense to me. For me and my friend (who also read the book) was a disappointment. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 11/02/25 Full Review Anthony P Emily Blunt is good in this movie and I would consider the twist and turns some what predicted, however the ending is good. However it is not a movie for a rewatch. I was pleased with the supporting cast, however it felt a bit dry with some over others. But followed the main character though alcoholism and getting sober and her memory coming back. With out spoilers, it was hard to get into and hard to follow the first 20 minutes had to rewatch parts to place characters. 2.5/5 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/20/25 Full Review Jelisije J Emily Blunt really carrie this film where she plays a women who world is unraveling and has a complete mental breakdown when she founds out the women of a couple she sees every day on the train begins to cheat on her spouse....... Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/09/25 Full Review Cincy M The Girl on the Train is a gripping psychological thriller that deserves far more appreciation than it received. Emily Blunt delivers a raw, vulnerable, and utterly transfixing performance. She fully inhabits the role of Rachel, a woman unraveling from grief, alcoholism, and memory loss, making us feel every ounce of her confusion and desperation. Blunt carries the film with a kind of tragic grace. She balances Rachel’s instability with an undercurrent of steely determination. The film’s pacing and structure are told nonlinearly through shifting perspectives, which amplify the suspense without feeling gimmicky. While some critics may have focused on its differences from the book or compared it unfavorably to Gone Girl, this movie stands on its own merits. Blunt's performance alone elevates it into a must-watch. She deserved far more awards season attention than she got. If you liked Revolutionary Road, you'll probably like this.
