Critics Consensus

Emily Blunt's outstanding performance isn't enough to keep The Girl on the Train from sliding sluggishly into exploitative melodrama.

Sarah Marshall Bitch Media When Emily Blunt is onscreen, it's impossible to look away. Feb 11, 2021 Full Review Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint If not for Blunt's fantastic performance, the film would have come across as a quickie capitalizing on the novel's popularity. As far as thrillers go,Girl on the Train works hard to make every player seem suspicious but the result isn't as juicy... Jul 31, 2019 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess Though never devolving into the levels of camp, The Girl on the Train presents itself as Gone Girl's trashier, but funner sister. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Joe Lipsett Anatomy of a Scream Podcast Network Blunt does her best to elevate the material, but dividing the film's focus between three different women (and all of their men) means no one has an opportunity to develop a fully formed character. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 4, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Apart from the film's acting, fans of the source material should ignore the adaptation and preserve their imagination's picture of Hawkins' novel. Rated: 2/4 Apr 9, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The herrings in The Girl on the Train might be the usual shade of robust red, but the film itself is largely a bloodless affair, not so much a whodunit as a wellobviouslythatpersondunit. John R I've never read the book, "The Girl on the Train" so my only experience with this material comes from the movie itself. And even if I have read the book a movie is based on (e.g., Dune), I never feel compelled to compare page by page how faithful the movie is to the book. To me, movies exist to be evaluated on their own merit as a work of art, and I was quite impressed with the movie, "The Girl on the Train." I enjoyed the use of the Unreliable Narrator cinematic tool in this film, as further influenced by the overuse of alcohol. Ultimately, this is a tale of three women whose lives are intertwined in a mystery that is revealed to us one onion layer at a time. Allison Janney gives another great character performance -- as expected. However, the emotional arcs of the three women are delivered via outstanding performances by Haley Bennett, Rebecca Ferguson, and Emily Blunt. Time and time again, as a viewer, I could empathize how deep each of them had to go into their characters (and the effort it took) to give us the powerhouse story we see on the screen. Emily Blunt, in particular, gives what I feel should have been an Oscar-worthy performance ... but she never even got a nomination for this role. Overall, this film is largely underrated ... and after watching it twice this past week on 4K UHD my appreciation for this film continues to grow. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Dave C It's been so long between viewings, I'd forgotten most of this... aside from the fact that I knew I'd seen it before! Lol. It jangles the emotions as it depicts various forms of abuse, and shows more than one character struggling and stressed as it weaves a messy, dysfunctional narrative almost to point of losing you as you try to keep up. It's worth the effort as things start connecting and developing, though the ending should really have been something more substantial, to be honest Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Emil P Not bad but mid. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Twiggy H A well put together murder mystery - at first, seems quite scrambled and messy, but is apparent was intentional to the plot of the story. Just enough to delay the 'yep, i was right' about that 'tom' character. As much as i dislike guys of that sort, i only continued to watch the film on the pure basis of it focusing on the main female characters, even though the initial portrayal of all three women was bullshit but i guess that was the 'bullshit' filter for the audience to see what each women were having to deal with throughout the story before the overall reveal. One thing that does annoy me though, is how the story seems to frequent the characters accessing one another's emails etc - it certainly is not a regular thing. And though the 'scot' character wasn't an abusive husband, it was correct to at least point out that excessing someone else's account is strictly a 'no-no'. Also, i strongly dislike the pretty girl saying a completely stupid and incorrect thing - abuse is NOT sexy, and to have added that in the film was sooooo tacky. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Luis Alexander M Good movie amazing acting from emely blunt Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/19/24 Full Review Brooke B I love an incredible thriller. This one is one of my all time favorites. The plot is intriguing, characters are interesting and the ending is incredibly satisfying. If you loved this movie watch the film Shrooms.
