What to Know

Critics Consensus

While certainly ambitious -- and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect -- Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its source material's vibrant heart.

Sarah Mirk Bitch Media The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. The message is to party like a rock star and dress like a robber baron - just don't waste all your money chasing a woman who waffles. Jan 15, 2021 Full Review J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Subtlety is not a concept but giddy as it is, The Great Gatsby lacks the lunatic excess of Moulin Rouge! Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator This is fantastically enjoyable, and a blast. It is wild and rampant and thrilling. It's the best film I've seen since the last best film I saw, whatever and whenever that was. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Some will highly enjoy the glamorous favoritism towards the Gatsby character that Luhrmann leans. Others will miss the enigmatic mystery the character possessed all the way until his final moments on the page and his resonance afterwards. Rated: A Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Extravagant and “modern”, the classic book adaptation is flawed, but its production design still wows, and DiCaprio’s mysterious turns inject much needed emotion and “substance”... the film is not saved by Luhrmann – it is saved in spite of him. Laura M Personally I thought the style in editing cheapened down the whole plot and made it quite unbearable. When it comes to the great gatsby I recommend the 1974 film. I agree with the casting choices but I don't like the execution. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/27/25 Full Review Joshua T Pretty movie, bad adaptation. It's a visually goregous movie that does its best to flaunt around its style, but hasty editing and rough pacing dilutes the charm that the original book had. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/22/25 Full Review Maddie B I didn't think it was even possible to hate this story anymore but this movie has made that possible. I get the sense that this movie is trying so hard to to make up for the lack of story by using over the top visuals but instead of being spectacular they end up just falling flat. Not to mention the music in this film is not only unappealing it just plain bad music. The costumes are also a monstrosity. They look like the cheap knock off versions on a dollar store knock off of the real thing. Also the weird sexual tension in almost every scene ruins the atmosphere and leaves an uneasy feeling when watching. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/21/25 Full Review Niklas L Although this movie is not considered "certified fresh" by the crowd, I think it is outstanding. The main reason is that the movie conveyes the books main themes as well as I think is possible. Never have I seen a movie that tries to so accurately map a book or story. After watching the movie for a second time, I noticed the incredible amount of detail that the screenwriters put into this movie. After all, it is difficult to convey any book in 2h 23m. The movie features as many original quotes as possible, and where it does not, the screenwriting does an enormous job of getting the general idea across. The general themes that I consider important: Status (change), Old vs. new money, the role of women, the industrial revolution - are even more pronounced due to the movies brevity. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/18/25 Full Review Nick C A fever dream of liquor and sequins. The parties, started rooted in a man's longing, were reduced to glittery excess. Baz understood the rush, the grandeur, but not the aching in their purpose. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/15/25 Full Review John L As usual, the pretentious critics got it wrong. While not letter for letter with Fitzgerald's original source material, this is an absolutely brilliant adaptation with outstanding performances, original elements that work, and a fantastic soundtrack that fuses music of the time with contemporary beats. To me, this is a classic film version of one of the great American novels. In other words, The Great Gatsby is indeed great! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
