What to Know

Critics Consensus

While certainly ambitious -- and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect -- Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its source material's vibrant heart.

Sarah Mirk Bitch Media The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. The message is to party like a rock star and dress like a robber baron - just don't waste all your money chasing a woman who waffles. Jan 15, 2021 Full Review J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Subtlety is not a concept but giddy as it is, The Great Gatsby lacks the lunatic excess of Moulin Rouge! Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator This is fantastically enjoyable, and a blast. It is wild and rampant and thrilling. It's the best film I've seen since the last best film I saw, whatever and whenever that was. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Some will highly enjoy the glamorous favoritism towards the Gatsby character that Luhrmann leans. Others will miss the enigmatic mystery the character possessed all the way until his final moments on the page and his resonance afterwards. Rated: A Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film Extravagant and “modern”, the classic book adaptation is flawed, but its production design still wows, and DiCaprio’s mysterious turns inject much needed emotion and “substance”... the film is not saved by Luhrmann – it is saved in spite of him. Steven L No, no, no, no, no! This is the movie that made me decide never to see another Baz Luhrmann film. How dare he think he can capture this masterpiece of American Literature and do it better! No he can't. The 1974 movie wasn't perfect, but at least the visual poetry was there. To make such strange moments as discovering the eyes of God, the light at the end of Daisy's Dock and the headlights after the accident was one horror. The other was that ridiculously staged ending. Having Nick Caraway drying out in a Wisconsin facility? No! Once again, the beautiful shot of Nick picking his white hat out of the water in his small motorboat on the bay is such a lovely way to start the story. Luhrmann's color palatte looks saturated so you can't even enjoy the clothes. (Think of how beautifully dressed a pregnant Mia Farrow was. The ice-cream pink suit Redford wore. Those were fashions of the era) SPOILERS AHEAD: There's a butler standing next to a telephone and he just stands there? I think not. DiCaprio was fine as Gatsby and he was the right actor at the time. Joel Edgarton was terrific as Tom Buchanan and Elizabeth Debecki almost captured Jordan Baker, but the movie was a dreadful interpretation of this beautiful novel. I've seen the 1974 many times and recommend that one over this any day. (The only piece of miscasting is Lois Chiles as Jordan Baker, a role that Ali Mcgraw would have been perfect for). Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Alysha S The visuals are impressive. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Benjamin H The Great Gatsby's themes are mostly well communicated through its lavish nature and highly stylized filmmaking while also having solid performances from its great cast, but it is also a bit bloated and overly detailed which does make this movie sometimes incohesive. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review Karlee S This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life. The cast is awful, the music is awful, the set is awful. Everything is awful. Words cannot possibly describe the pure horror I felt watching this terrible movie. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH IT. I loved the book and was excited to watch the movie only to suffer tremendous disappointment and trauma. I will never get back the time I spent watching this movie and that will be one of the worst regrets of my life. I don't rate movies but I've made an exception for this god awful piece of trash they call cinema. I wish I could rate it zero stars or less but it will not let me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/22/24 Full Review M7AMD A there is something about this movie just felt good Acting and Direction is good weird choice of songs but I was okey with it in fact I was enjoying it :) story felt emotional a bit and its probably because of Leonardo it was a good story I probably going to rewatch it again in the future Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
