Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and -- as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits -- pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While certainly ambitious -- and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect -- Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its source material's vibrant heart.

The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. The message is to party like a rock star and dress like a robber baron - just don't waste all your money chasing a woman who waffles. Go to Full Review

Subtlety is not a concept but giddy as it is, The Great Gatsby lacks the lunatic excess of Moulin Rouge! Go to Full Review

This is fantastically enjoyable, and a blast. It is wild and rampant and thrilling. It's the best film I've seen since the last best film I saw, whatever and whenever that was. Go to Full Review

Some will highly enjoy the glamorous favoritism towards the Gatsby character that Luhrmann leans. Others will miss the enigmatic mystery the character possessed all the way until his final moments on the page and his resonance afterwards. Go to Full Review

Extravagant and “modern”, the classic book adaptation is flawed, but its production design still wows, and DiCaprio’s mysterious turns inject much needed emotion and “substance”... the film is not saved by Luhrmann – it is saved in spite of him. Go to Full Review

Carla V 1d I really loved this movie because it combines visual style, music, great acting, and a profound message, making the viewer experience both the beauty and the tragedy of the story. See more Daemon J Nov 11 Very interesting artistic choice to have it shot and edited like a 1920s film at times. Acting is decent; however all of this immersion is completely broken by the horrible and jarring cuts to EDM and rap music every 5 minutes. The film takes place during the JAZZ AGE after all. The sound director should have picked ONE genre. They, however, decided to mix the genres (At one point they crossfade from modern rap to rhapsody in blue, and it abolsutely does not work). The result is an utter and complete mess of a soundtrack that detracts from an otherwise good film. See more John S Nov 9 It’s set in the 1920s, and I don’t like the amount of hip-hop in it, it’s too much. See more Nicola B Nov 3 What the hell did I just watch? Probably one of the worst films I’ve ever seen in my life. A complete waste of time. Absolute chaos, and nothing made sense. Worst love story ever. No wonder it took me 12 years to get round to watching it. See more John T Oct 20 Beautifully filmed in an other-worldly style which suits the 1930's excess. Slightly odd story, but thoroughly enjoyable See more Sasha S Oct 17 Suprisingly, I really liked this movie despite not really liking the book! I personally believe it was true to the book and that all the charcters were represented well. This movie helped me appreciate classic literature and helped me better understand the plot visually. I totally recommend this movie to anyone who has read the book or anybody who likes a story that will make you go "What? No way!". One think I didn't agree with was how they portrayed the Valley of Ashes; I believe it could have felt more emotionally gloomy then physically (If that makes sense). See more Read all reviews
