      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

While certainly ambitious -- and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect -- Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its source material's vibrant heart.

Kenadie D I think the movie is a really good, and detailed. The book and the movie are similar, but they also have some things that aren't alike. The movie has scenes that are not like the book, and they skip some important details. The book is narrated by Nick, but the movie is different. Yes, it is narrated by nick in the movie, but it also focuses more on Gatsby than nicks perspective. Jordan and Nicks relationship doesn't appear as often in the movie as it appears in the book. The movie shows Myrtle as beautiful, as the book says she is thicker and has less beauty in the face. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Jordan C Greatest movie of all time. Everything is so marvelous! The cinematography, the soundtrack, the costuming, the cast, I was completely transported to a realm of glamour like no other. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Estuard F Una película de drama demasiada fuera de lo comun que atrae tu atención con la atmósfera Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/07/24 Full Review Jackie G There nothing unpleasing about this undeniably over-saturated footage Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review jack f To go from Gershwin to Beyoncé and Jay Z to Lana Del Ray - that is merely a piece of the evidence for an incredibly versatile and acutely achievèd arc of the film, and the nature of the beautifully bipolar cultural moment captured in this visually perfectly-whelming adaptation of a literary masterpiece to which Luhrmam gives an IV of life in this immortal tale, thanks to DiCaprio's tragically under appreciated performance that will only grow to be more appreciated the longer it sits in the dvd player ready for another viewing. Everyone who played a part in this fantastically flawless, niveau riche, spectacular spectacle certainly saw the green light and saw it to fruition. A nod to Brooks Brothers can't be left out either. May the green light flash forever. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/27/24 Full Review Tercy D My absolute favorite movie, everytime in the half of the movie i fall asleep. So Colorful and beautiful when Lana Del Ray sings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Sarah Mirk Bitch Media The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. The message is to party like a rock star and dress like a robber baron - just don't waste all your money chasing a woman who waffles. Jan 15, 2021 Full Review J. Hoberman ARTINFO.com Subtlety is not a concept but giddy as it is, The Great Gatsby lacks the lunatic excess of Moulin Rouge! Feb 22, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Spectator This is fantastically enjoyable, and a blast. It is wild and rampant and thrilling. It's the best film I've seen since the last best film I saw, whatever and whenever that was. Sep 4, 2018 Full Review Dennis Harvey 48 Hills It is too painful even to imagine the havoc a director as MTV-flashy and hollow as BL wrought on poor Fitzgerald, the literary hero of my teenage years... Apr 1, 2024 Full Review Bianca Garner The Movie Buff The Great Gatsby lacks the charm and the nostalgia of musicals such as High Society, An American in Paris, and Singin’ in the Rain. Ehrlich claims Luhrmann is trying to reinvent the present, but it doesn’t feel like that way.
