Midwest native Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) arrives in 1922 New York in search of the American dream. Nick, a would-be writer, moves in next-door to millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her philandering husband, Tom (Joel Edgerton). Thus, Nick becomes drawn into the captivating world of the wealthy and -- as he bears witness to their illusions and deceits -- pens a tale of impossible love, dreams, and tragedy.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While certainly ambitious -- and every bit as visually dazzling as one might expect -- Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby emphasizes visual splendor at the expense of its source material's vibrant heart.

The film does nothing to beat against the current. There's no lesson that all this 1920s extravagance is problematic. The message is to party like a rock star and dress like a robber baron - just don't waste all your money chasing a woman who waffles. Go to Full Review

Subtlety is not a concept but giddy as it is, The Great Gatsby lacks the lunatic excess of Moulin Rouge! Go to Full Review

This is fantastically enjoyable, and a blast. It is wild and rampant and thrilling. It's the best film I've seen since the last best film I saw, whatever and whenever that was. Go to Full Review

The craft on display — both behind and in front of the camera — is undeniable. Fans of Luhrmann’s signature flair will find plenty to enjoy, but the emotional core sometimes gets lost beneath all that glitter. Go to Full Review

Some will highly enjoy the glamorous favoritism towards the Gatsby character that Luhrmann leans. Others will miss the enigmatic mystery the character possessed all the way until his final moments on the page and his resonance afterwards. Go to Full Review

Sabrina C @SabrinaCheek 4d An adaptation that does little to creatively bring a beloved novel to life, and leaves much to be desired. It's heavy use of CGI and 2010s electronic music leaves it feeling strangely dated to the 2010s, despite being set in the 1920s. Which there is no excuse for; electronic music and the 1920s aesthetic have been blended before, think "Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco. Why would you do it the other way around, with only songs from the year your movie was made, to make it forever connected to a year that has absolutely nothing to do with the story? This film lacks heart and soul from production and direction, and is edited like a commercial. What brings up my rating is the efforts from Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio, who seem to be the only ones who care about the outcome of this film. Both are perfectly cast, and honestly deserved a better movie. This could have been greatly improved by a better composer, more traditional sets, and something to say. See more Eben W. @Pendrag0n111 5d I sincerely enjoy this movie. But the choices of modern day music in a period piece cause a bit of a drop in the immersion of the film. See more William V @WilliamMatthewConnolly 5d Visually extravagant, musical blends, Gershwin Rapsody in Blue, Jazz, exquisite cinematography, 1920s' yesterdays informing 2020s days that human nature does not change, that beneath billionaires' galas and ballrooms are ordinary folks and elemental simple love stories of a man and a woman, of men and women, and that love conquers all. See more Scott A. Jan 6 The film would have been much better, if a modern time period soundtrack wasn’t used. Blending modern sound with the roaring 1920’s, created a general disconnect making it difficult for the audience to submerge themselves with the direction of the film. The music choice throws off the viewer entirely giving the film a corny vibe. See more Julia H @juliaft Dec 31 This is a great movie. See more Jude M. Dec 22 I thought it was a good representation of the book. The visuals were stunning, and the world of Gatsby really came to life on screen. A solid adaptation that captured the story’s style and mood. See more Read all reviews
