      Audience Member The plot kept me watching to see what would happen next, but there was something missing in the performances. Usually actors need more subtlety, but in this film, when the characters expressed love or hate for one another, I didn't feel it. Angela Landsbury had a few moments that touched me, but for a movie supposedly involving passion among French people (for heaven's sake), there was too much reserve all around. Not suggesting Hollywood histrionics would be preferable, but... something. The song he whistles all the way through, and that they hear soldiers sing while visiting his ill friend, was "Auprès de ma blonde" which is hundreds of years old. Almost 20 years later it was used in an Elvis film with new English lyrics: I love only one girl/ One I got my arms around/ I love only one girl / One in every town.
