Ty Burr Washington Post “Straw” has all the feels it wants and little of the art it needs. Rated: 2/4 Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Lisa Kennedy New York Times Henson — so deeply committed to her character’s emotional cratering — still makes us care. Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Lovia Gyarkye The Hollywood Reporter Straw isn’t the worst Perry film, but it suffers from the same problems that plague all of his projects. The narrative is chock full of heavy-handed metaphors, fussy plotting and strained drama. The best parts of the film can be attributed to Henson. Jun 9, 2025 Full Review Steve Murray ArtsATL The strengths come less from the script or direction than from its powerhouse star, Taraji P. Henson. Jul 3, 2025 Full Review Nicholas Bell Fish Jelly Films (YouTube) A trio of emotionally charged performances from Henson, Shepherd, and Taylor mark Straw as one of the most compelling films Tyler Perry has ever made, even with a narrative that needed to hit the brakes well before it hurtles past a point of no return... Rated: 2.5/5 Jul 2, 2025 Full Review Jackie K. Cooper jackiekcooper.com Henson is great but Sheri Shepherd steals the show. Rated: 8/10 Jun 24, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

John F Started of reasonably well, then spiraled down into an unbelievable, drawn out tear jerker. Not worth another word. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/25 Full Review Taylor D Straw is another commentary on culture, economic hardship, social media, and law enforcement. Its plot isn’t original—the protagonist faces pressure from all sides through a chain of tragic coincidences and eventually snaps when confronted by one ill-willed or foolish person, only to be both celebrated and persecuted. What sets this iteration apart is its relevance today. The film holds up a mirror, reflecting our collective limitations and flaws in stark detail. And the ending? It broke my heart. Nobody should have to suffer that much—but people do, anyway. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/25 Full Review Steve J I really wanted to like it but the writing is terrible. A lot of plot holes. The acting was great. It was painful to see great actors in a movie this bad Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/07/25 Full Review Audience Member One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Stop letting Tyler Perry make movies Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/07/25 Full Review Kieran M This film felt like it was written by a 13 year old who didn't know how to finish his story for English class. Followed the rhythm of "This happened and then this happened and then this happened" It pulled on hearts strings up to a point but then every character seemed like a Disney villain. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Rick M At first I was so mad and about to stop watching, but at the end ....I end up crying. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
