Audience Member When I first watched this movie some two years ago, its style brought very much to mind the French auteur, Eric Rohmer. Eric was best known for a series of relatively low-budget films he made that were studies of people exhibiting some individual peculiarity or shortcoming portrayed with understated insight and a touch of wry humor. (My Night at Maud's, Claire's Knee, etc.) Each was a kind of subtle study of an aspect of human nature. Because of that subtlety, I very much doubt Rohmer's works are much looked at other than in, perhaps, the rare course on 60s French cinema. So, a word of advice might be, if this kind of low-key creativity is not your cup of tea, you would be well to pass it over. Olivier and his partner, James, arrive at a villa in Provence owned by Olivier's family to enjoy a holiday. By a chance meeting at the airport, James runs into a university friend, Caroline, who has just had a bad breakup with her boyfriend. On impulse, and apparently without much discussion with Olivier, his sympathy for her plight prompts him to invite her to join them. Drama ensues. All begins smoothly at first. But in a key scene in the movie, the three characters are sitting around a table one evening when Caroline asks each of them when they became aware they were gay. James answers unhesitatingly that he always knew, from an early age. Olivier indicates more evasively that it was sometime during his university years. The implication is not lost on Caroline: there is reason to believe that Olivier may have what is sometimes referred to today as "fluidity" in his sexuality and that at some point he was capable of being attracted to women. Caroline, a rather attractive and sensuous redhead, has now found something new to spice up her vacation time. She decides to see if she can stimulate, in subtle and not so subtle ways, a response from Olivier. There are activities like the seemingly innocent cavorting with him in the pool. But there is also a time when Olivier brings her to a clothes closet to pick out old T-shirts for her to wear on a painting project. She tries on two, blithely disrobing in front of him. For a while, James is oblivious. Until he is not. There is a scene in the movie that shows a wasp buzzing by a window. Most of us, when we see such a thing, usually decide to just leave them be and hope that they go on their way and be well on their own. But, of course, first we have to recognize that they are a wasp, and wasps can sting, so it's better to avoid them. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member An infuriatingly interesting movie that never delves deep enough into its own material. A movie that is visually interesting and well-performed, but steps away from the issues that could have elevated the film from a good film to an important one. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A strange 3 hander about a gay couple on holiday with their straight and recently single girl friend. it looks beautiful and the acting is ok, its a little light but nicely done. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is what a great script can do with only three actors and one location. Powerful use of silence and subtlety. The camera is the fourth actor, an active voyeur that sees what the characters conceal from each other.
