Critics Consensus

Welcome to Marwen has dazzling effects and a sadly compelling story, but the movie's disjointed feel and clumsy screenplay make this invitation easy to decline.

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I didn't find it creepy -- maybe I'm just creepy! Sep 13, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba With Welcome to Marwen, director Robert Zemeckis, as he has so often in this stage of career, focuses more on the visuals of a story instead of the why of it. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine The partnership between Zemeckis and Carell is ... what keeps Welcome to Marwen from falling off its own high wire-and finally brings the movie home. Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Calum Cooper Source (Scotland) It feels designed to collect the tears of the most lachrymose via mechanicalised sentimentality, which is a disservice to Hogancamp’s inspiring story. Miller Ready Steady Cut Marwen was written and directed by the technologically obsessed Robert Zemeckis, who brings Hogencamp’s world to life in a way that is uneven with its real-life subject. Christopher J an amazing film that is very interesting and intriguing steve carell's sad yet powerful performance is osar worthy however it is a tad bit confusing 9.5/10 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Samuel W A fascinating tale of a man with PTSD, told through the lens of his dolls and his stop motion film. Personally, the movie was thirty minutes too long, the characters could have been paced better, and the most exciting moments of the entire film was when he was creating the world-famous town, Marwen. Beautifully told as it centers around one event that happened before the events of the film and how this troubled man, played by the great Steve Carrell, tries to adapt to his brand new life as his old one was beaten out of him. An interesting premise, but the execution was underwhelming, though not terrible. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/25 Full Review Chris K Dude. I don't know what I watched. It's worth watching. I don't think that this every needed to be made, but I'm not mad at it for being made. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/06/24 Full Review Jamie C Excellent story telling, stellar cast. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Donald R I found it fascinating and enjoyed the story plot compared to other movies I’ve seen Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/28/24 Full Review alan g One of the most depressing movies ever made. Sad story, wooden acting. Implausible plot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews
