      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Welcome to Marwen has dazzling effects and a sadly compelling story, but the movie's disjointed feel and clumsy screenplay make this invitation easy to decline.

alan g One of the most depressing movies ever made. Sad story, wooden acting. Implausible plot. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Gorptholemew T 🍀 4.1/10 Robert Zemeckis tried to make a snoopy film but then forgot he was a dog. I can't tell if this is creepy or cute. I actually found this very enjoyable at times but it's just kinda odd but not in a good way. I should probably go watch the documentary cause I've heard it's better and this guy is very interesting. Grade C Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Robert M I can't believe it has taken Robert Zemekis 5 shots at Live Capture CGI to discover that he's better off at Live Action. Cast Away and Forrest Gump are classics while (prior CGI efforts) Polar Express and Beowolf are CGI disasters. And with 5 attempts he still doesn't address the main issues of Live Capture CGI which is dead eyes, blank unlifelike faces, and dialogue not matching the mouth movements. How do you not improve after 5 attempts? The stories are interesting but you can't get by the CGI drawbacks. Disney got it right by severing future films with Zemekis. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/14/23 Full Review donnie m i LOVE Steve Carrell and this was a really unique movie Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Jace E I was intrigued and fascinated by the majority of the film. Welcome to Marwen shows the heartbreaking and devastating trials that someone with PTSD faces every day. I loved being transported to Mark's world of Marwen and being able to see what he sees and feel what he feels. I was able to take part in his escape from reality and I relished every moment spent with Hogie. Unfortunately, every plot point involving a romantic interest was off putting and distracting. The source material and inspiration was there, the screenwriters just needed to focus on Mark's relationship with Hogie rather than his relationship with Nicol, Roberta and even Deja. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/16/23 Full Review Denlian C I love this movie so much. As for amateur me - all actors are masters. But Steve is collecting a special team surrounding him. He became my very favourite actor while I started to watch almost all movies with him. You don't need to be a captain to understand Mark. Some people's lifes are like the war: you work hard, you do your best and then you realise that some bad powers were rulling your fate to make her say "no" to you, to make you forget that you are a real captain of your life, to make you forget that you deserve love. Never forget this and with help of God we will fight any evil. This movie made me cry hot, genuine tears. I feel you, guys! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) I didn't find it creepy -- maybe I'm just creepy! Sep 13, 2019 Full Review Roxana Hadadi Pajiba With Welcome to Marwen, director Robert Zemeckis, as he has so often in this stage of career, focuses more on the visuals of a story instead of the why of it. Feb 7, 2019 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine The partnership between Zemeckis and Carell is ... what keeps Welcome to Marwen from falling off its own high wire-and finally brings the movie home. Jan 11, 2019 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies A frustrating (and frankly boring) mess. Rated: 2/5 Aug 21, 2022 Full Review M.N. Miller Ready Steady Cut Marwen was written and directed by the technologically obsessed Robert Zemeckis, who brings Hogencamp’s world to life in a way that is uneven with its real-life subject. Rated: 2/5 Aug 17, 2022 Full Review Josh Parham Next Best Picture The film never manages its tonal shifts that well and the intimate story it is trying to craft that focuses on a man desperately trying to cling to stability and preaching acceptance of the outsider never comes through.
