This trio of tales, based on classic short stories, chronicles the complicated relations between the sexes. In "The Man in the Brooks Brothers Shirt," salesman Gerry (Beau Bridges) seduces train traveler Viki (Elizabeth McGovern). Then, in "Dusk Before Fireworks," a night of romance between Hobie (Peter Weller) and Kit (Molly Ringwald) goes bad when the phone keeps ringing. Finally, in "Hills Like White Elephants," Robert (James Woods) discovers Hadley (Melanie Griffith) is pregnant.

Audience Member Trio of classic short stories features some great writing and performances. Elizabeth McGovern & Beau Bridges are probably the best and in the best segment written & directed by Frederic Raphael and based on a short story by Mary McCarthy. Molly Ringwald & Peter Weller are probably the weakest in the Valerie Curtain (writer) and Ken Russell segment based on a story by Dorothy Parker. (Apparently his segment was re-edited and rescored after he finished it.) The last segment featuring James Woods & Melanie Griffith in a Hemingway story directed by Tony Richardson are very good and probably have the most emotional weight to carry. It'd be nice if we had more experimental productions like this today. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
