Set in 1980s Singapore, a time when studying abroad was a luxury that few could afford, Loke (played by Mark Lee) is a single father who works hard to ensure that his only daughter Eileen (played by Xenia Tan) gets the best education. Loke lies to Eileen, telling her that he can afford her overseas education, and convinces her to go to New York City to further her studies. While she is away, Loke moves into a one-room flat to save as much money as possible. Loke finds himself in the spotlight as his new senior neighbors try to befriend him. He meets Tan (played by Peter Yu) who is the default "leader" of their makeshift social club, the Senior Citizens' Corner. Loke, who is illiterate, comes to rely on Tan to read and write letters to and from Eileen; Tan finds solace in helping his new friend because he yearns for the same relationship with his estranged daughter. Tragedy strikes when Tan receives bad news about Eileen, and unable to tell Loke the devastating truth, he fabricates a lie that becomes full-blown deception.

John Lui The Straits Times (Singapore) Singapore has lacked local films that hit strong emotional notes without descending into sentimentality, and in Wonderland, that magical middle ground has been achieved. Rated: 4/5 Aug 14, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Human N Absolute tear jerker. I have not watched such an emotional film in my recent memory. Thank you for making such a movie..... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Roland C Heart warming Singapore movie about two fathers, Loke and Tan, who become friends when one moved into an apartment in a block of public housing flats after selling the house to fund his daughter’s American University school fees. Despite their seemingly different backgrounds, where the new neighbour (Loke) is a man who makes a living selling Taoist/Buddhist offerings for the deceased, and the other (Tan) a Church Choir Director, they became firm friends when the former, who is illiterate, seeks the help of the latter to write letters to his daughter, and also to translate the letters that he receives from his daughter. Loke is a recluse and likes to remain alone and anonymous when he gets home after work. Tan goes often to the “Residents’ Corner” (a kind of social space for residents of the flats to gather as their apartments are small, and most are living alone with no spouse/partner) to socialise with the neighbours. Music helped to bond the two men when one night Loke started playing a tune (that his late wife loved) on his harmonica, and Tan decided to play the same tune on his keyboard. Tan then used this opportunity to invite Loke to play the harmonica in his church. Loke initially rejected the idea but eventually agreed. Music also helped Loke get to know his neighbours better when they attended a neighbourhood concert together. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Read all reviews
