Critics Consensus

XX's array of distinct female filmmaking voices -- and the empowerment their collection represents -- offer enough thrills to make up for the overall uneven quality that plagues most anthology projects.

A delightful and horrific variety pack. Go to Full Review
Elena Lazic Little White Lies 03/21/2018
Framed by pretty banal animation, the film as a whole reflects a rather limited vision of womanhood, with three shorts focused solely on mothers. That XX proves patchy is a disappointment, particularly as it is a noble project. Go to Full Review

The four narratives ... achieve varying levels of black comedy and terror with an emphasis on women's issues. Go to Full Review

The promising concept behind XX draws our interest from start to finish, and the arrangement assures that, if we don't like the current segment, a new one is just a few minutes away. Go to Full Review

Obviously this is a film that everyone was rooting for... but it just didn't thrill me overall. Go to Full Review

Wwith Carillo's creepy Brothers Quay-inspired animation holding it all together, this is an admirable, mostly enjoyable success that I hope inspires a franchise. Go to Full Review

Jeffrey P Sep 20 A series of four short films very loosely connected via some creative stop-motion animation. The biggest problem here is that the first short film is so intriguing and makes one want more, that naturally leads to the rest feeling like a disappointing letdown. The second film wasn’t very interesting, we’ve all seen Weekend at Bernie’s, the familiar face was all it really had going for it. By the time the third and fourth tales come along I’ve kinda mentally checked out and they’re mostly forgettable. There are better horror anthologies and there are worse; Tales of Halloween is one of the better Halloween-horror anthologies and will tell you which direction this leans in. See more Texas D 08/25/2024 Dumb unrealistic characters. lol I mean wtf I’ve seen better films from high school kids then this POS lol See more penguin s 01/19/2023 All in all, it was an entertaining watch. I found the stop motion between the shorts just as interesting. The 1st really left me hanging, the second was entertaining but had me scratching my head over the main's motivations. It was comical more than scary. The 3rd was by far most creepy and the final, well acted, left me wanting more. It would make a great movie. See more Kevin A 12/17/2022 This movie is drastically underrated. A movie that consists of multiple mini stories, each manages to capture the different types of horror. If you do watch it, be sure to give a real chance & watch the whole thing. See more john b 11/22/2021 Horrendously terrible even for low budget standards. See more Read all reviews
