Hank Stuever Washington Post Both the movie and the series are drawn from Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 novel - allowing "Das Boot" to broaden its action well beyond the U-boat. Jul 9, 2019 Full Review Adrian Daub The New Republic The narrative of Das Boot hews so slavishly to convention that one can basically game out the season by the end of episode three or four. And at that point, one has to ask: Why tell this story at all? Jun 21, 2019 Full Review John Doyle Globe and Mail Each character has layers beneath what we first see. Some scenes are blunt in their depiction of violence - there's sex and nudity too - and throughout there's a livid tension. Jun 21, 2019 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Slow and steady WWII drama aims for depth over flair. Rated: 4/5 Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Sean Axmaker Noir City With the focus constantly shifting between the characters and conflicts in all sections of the ship, this story is a constantly surprising and a thoroughly satisfying tour of duty. Aug 12, 2019 Full Review Ben Lindbergh The Ringer The budget is big, the scenery is immersive, and the acting is competent. Jun 19, 2019 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Heavily focused on the french resistance and Gestapo. Should have stuck to the U-boat crews and their journey through the war. Expect the usual all German are bad narrative. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/08/24 Full Review C R I really enjoyed this series. The acting was decent, the characters were painted well and the villans played their parts perfectly. Quite captivating and engaging. I did take a star off for such repetitive and consistent focus on smoking which grew tiresome pretty quickly. I get they smoked a lot in that era, but it really isn't needed in every opening scene, zooming in to ashtrays, people lighting cigarettes, standing there smoking. I think some directors think it's creative, or artistic, but it generally just screams "has been directors", or "want to be try hard"' directors. The majority of us don't smoke and feel no need to look at it all the time on shows like this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review scott c It had a lot of potential. I wish they stuck with just the Navy part and skipped the shoreside parts of the show. Way too much drama and too much betrayal. Were there really that many Sub Commanders willing to betray their own country in a time of war? Constant 2nd guessing of their Commanders? Doubt it. That made it unrealistic to me. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/23/23 Full Review Jack M Loved the original movie so I was excited to watch this show. A cool show but overall wasn't great. One of the characters that I really couldn't stand was Carla who is supposed to be a protagonist was extremely unlikable, her character was poorly written and easily hated, it's crazy to me that a bad guy in the show who is a nazi (Forster) is much more likable than her. The whole French resistance part of the show could be removed and the show would be much better. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/12/23 Full Review Istvan K A great series with good plot.Absolutely amazing , among the trash we have to endure.Recommended with all the 5 stars. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Pauli V The original is and remains to be the best submarine movie/series ever. But this new series manages to become better war series than the original was. Good job! Combination of u-boot scenes, espionage and resistance parts shows how ugly war can be. If you want to see the best submarine movie/series ever. Go to see original 1982. If you want to see good war series, go to see new 2018 version.
