Lauren Coates Chicago Reader Though the strength of Davies’s writing is inconsistent across the trilogy, the Doctor Who 60th specials are a charming (if indulgent) blast from the past that honors the show’s history while laying the groundwork for an exciting new chapter Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 15, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

丁 布 Thanks to the screenwriter for giving the new version of Doctor Who a good ending. As the show says, the Doctor is already very tired and needs some new energy, so it's just right to stop here. But I don't have the courage to watch the new new doctor anymore. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/24 Full Review Kalissa H Enjoyable. David Tennant is phenomenal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/11/24 Full Review Martin G The plot was meandering, the visuals were sterile and "modern", even moreso than Whittaker's seasons, which is saying something, and the messaging was as blunt and unsubtle as a sledgehammer to the frontal lobe. I was hoping the return of RTD would signal a return to higher quality writing, but this is bordering on parody. The actors seem to be trying, but their performances are stiff and snap between emotions incredibly quickly, which feels more like a failure of direction and writing. The effects look decent, but suffer largely from their own impressiveness. There's a lot of CGI and puppetry going on, but they're very difficult to move around, so the creatures barely do anything physically besides sit or stand there menacingly. The climax of the story was embarrassing, and did a disservice to the original send-off of Donna Noble by using it as a vehicle for a message that was both obvious and tiring by the end. Overall, it feels like an episode that had decent ingredients, but no one who actually knew how to combine them, and instead leaned heavily into the message as a crutch so that when criticism came, it could be waved away as one "ism" or another. This seems to be the hallmark of the new Davies era: disregard plot, character motivation and logic, do something provocative, wait for the reactionaries, and then attribute all criticism, legitimate or otherwise to them. I imagine it's quite freeing to convince yourself that every non-positive review comes from an evil person whom you can disregard, although I wonder if you can learn anything while doing so.
