In junior high school, Danny Grossman was the top-rated 6th-grade basketball player in the country, so good that his teammate Stephen Curry was his backup. That is until it was discovered that Danny's father forged his birth certificate, revealing that "12-year-old" Danny was actually 15, ending his basketball career. Decades later, Danny is at rock bottom. Between a failed marriage, a turbulent rapport with his daughter and a questionable relationship with the truth, Danny's potential is squandered. When the sports memorabilia store he owns, Mr. Throwback, nears bankruptcy, he finds himself with nowhere to turn and decides to target his old pal Stephen Curry for help. One night, Danny "accidentally" bumps into Stephen and they reconnect. He steals Steph's game-worn jersey to sell for quick cash but gets caught red-handed. Panicked, Danny makes up a lie, putting him at the center of yet another, potentially explosive scandal.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Mr. Throwback gets considerable lift from a very game Steph Curry, making for a daffy mockumentary that scores with consistent three-pointers if not slam dunks.

Daniel Fienberg The Hollywood Reporter I liked elements of Mr. Throwback and, it must be said, Steph Curry is pretty good. But the material does not come together as a good show. Aug 12, 2024 Full Review Richard Roeper Chicago Sun-Times There’s just enough material to fill that six-chapter run, and the premise is occasionally stretched thin, but we never go more than a couple of scenes without a laugh-out-loud moment, thanks to the sharp dialogue and the winning performances. Rated: 3/4 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times In the final period, it drives hard toward a happy ending — or endings — which you may find contrived, or moving. Or even both. Aug 8, 2024 Full Review Tara Ariano Cracked Mr. Throwback is very good — so good, in fact, that my harshest criticism of this show about Steph Curry is that it apparently had to star Steph Curry. Aug 28, 2024 Full Review Stephanie Morgan Common Sense Media The show is a delight, using glib and satirical comedy to take aim at virtually everything and everyone. Aug 27, 2024 Full Review Akos Peterbencze The Screen Adam Pally’s Danny is so asinine, self-centered, and oblivious that he's become my new favorite loser to watch on TV. There isn't a dull moment when he's on the screen... Aug 20, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews
