There was a strong lack of intimacy between the main character and herself. I didn't see development in her grief or journey. Everything she chose (especially the boys *who I must say she had no real chemistry or bond with*) eroded the storyline of why her character needed to exist. ‘Never have I ever' seemed overly saturated with starting problems and never finishing them. It seemed surrounded with reversing what was and wasn't realistic in Devi's life. For example: trying to solve death while trying not to solve unhealthy obsessional behavior. Everything Devi clung to was through anger, especially, in her relationships with Ben, Ethan, her mom, and Paxton.
If the goal was to keep the audience stuck in Devi's cyclical whirlpool of grief and in a trance of confusion to reflect Devi's life, I give credit. However, there seemed to be a withdrawal of intentional support on different parts of the show's storyline. To me, all of Devi's relationships with the boys were nonsensical except the one she had with Des. She had no real stability outside of chaos. Again, this brings up the question of why her character needed to exist? The very last episode of the final season Devi warps back into displacement. She turns on her connection with her dad as she prepares for a new transition into college. I feel as though her dad's death is left hanging in the balance as she is distracted by other things.
A lot of the show seemed random and untethered to a true cinematic story. There was an experience but the experience couldn't find a way to become the story. And I think because of that it missed a lot of marks. It needed more.

I don't normally like young adult/teen shows but this one broke through somehow, although I think season 1+2 were it's high.
It's smart, funny, touching, and I think the unique narration style - while takes a little getting used to! - is really cool. I'll miss Devi and her friends.
The only downside was like with all teen dramas... you could feel every episode building up to the 'teachable moment'. I can imagine this being put on in a high school classroom and the teacher switching off and saying, 'Right, and what do we learn from this?'. It was rammed down your throat a little bit.

ok so first things first, that plot summary is not that accurate and i feel like it lacks a lot of what happens this season that in my opinion is more important than the boys Devi is involucrated with! now, let's talk about the farewell season of this incredible comedy of the past few years. let's stablish first that i took more than two months finishing this one, since university finals and all jusr crept in and i abandonned it momentarily. but i did at last and that helped me realize that even though it was an enjoyable last ride, it was very plain. like nothing very major happened or there wasn't a big of a drama as in the previous ones so, at last, it was the vanilla of all the seasons. i mean her university story and the full circle with her terapist and her mental struggles were amazing to see. it really wrapped at the right time and with the correct storylines so i'm not bothered by the ending at all. i just wished the season could have been more entertaining somehow. they did kamala wrong switching her storyline from her finding herself in her life and job, to her stalking her grandmother's boyfriend. they did redeem her though by the end, finally being devi's big sister. i love how nalini got her confidence to date again and her storyline was fire this season. however i also found eleanor and fabiola's plot to be not as good as devi's was and aneesa was pretty much absent through it all. let's not even talk about ethan because that's a low point as well! as i said, loved how devi discovered herslef and got pre-college struggles i found myself into a couple of years back! again the closure was right in every sense of the word, and i think they ended the story closing eveything they had to, leaving devi and her father in peace with it and with each other. after all, i'm leaving satisfied and so glad i watched these characters grow up and find themselves in the world. loved the whole series in general and i'm going to miss it nonetheless! i truly had the time of my life helping devi navigate through high school, and since she has moved on, so should we. see you later mcenroe! also, TEAM BEN from day one! SO FUCKING HAPPY THEY WERE ENDGAME <3
