This MGM+ original docuseries follows the horrifying grave robber and serial killer Ed Gein whose crimes inspired such iconic films as Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs. With new reveals and never-before-heard recordings, viewers will be transported to late-1950s Middle America and submerged in Gein’s perverse mind. The series explores Gein’s upbringing and twisted relationship with his mother, his early grave robbing and murders, and the police’s discovery of his terrifying house of horrors.

Stephanie Morgan Common Sense Media The title of Psycho: The Lost Tapes of Ed Gein is misleading for a series that focuses as much on the ghoulish fascination of the people who've studied the serial killer as on the recordings of the man himself. Darth Arc A Psych: Ed Gein’s Lost Tapes Review – 4 Episodes of Absolutely Nothing Just wrapped up Psych: Ed Gein’s Lost Tapes, and I feel like I’ve aged 10 years. This is easily one of the most painfully stretched documentaries I’ve ever seen. They somehow managed to drag what should’ve been a single 45-minute episode into four bloated parts. Each episode feels like running a marathon in quicksand—slow, repetitive, and with absolutely no payoff. The crime scene photos? Oh, buckle up, because you’re going to see the same three pictures on an infinite loop. It’s like they ran out of material halfway through and just started recycling everything. I swear, I’ve seen better Ed Gein breakdowns on YouTube from channels with zero budget, but at least they didn’t treat me like I’d forget what I just watched five minutes ago. And the worst part? The looping! They loop the same photos over and over like a PowerPoint presentation with three slides. Now let’s talk about the absolute clown move of splitting this into four parts. It’s like they thought, “How can we make this as unbearable as possible?” Who’s the genius behind this decision? Give that person a participation trophy and a lifetime ban from making documentaries. The only reason to subject yourself to this slow-motion trainwreck is the actual audio recordings of Ed Gein. Hearing the man’s voice is undeniably eerie and adds some authenticity to the story. But here’s the thing—there are way better ways to learn about Ed Gein that won’t waste four hours of your life. You could watch a single YouTube video, read a Wikipedia article, or just listen to one of the audio clips on its own. Final thoughts: If you’re morbidly curious about what Ed Gein sounded like, go ahead, but don’t expect to learn anything you didn’t already know. This is 4/10 at best, and that’s me being generous for the audio recordings. Save yourself the agony and just Google him. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review Morgan A Fascinating but easily could have been 2 episodes, not four. There are only a certain number of photos, etc.. so it was four hours of the same images/footage/recordings with different experts talking over them. Again, fascinating and I did learn some things, but ultimately it became boring after seeing the same photo for the twelfth time. I sometimes wonder why series are stretched out like this.. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Jimi B If you're a Ed Gein historian and want to absorb all you can about him, then this is the series for you. People writing reviews and insinuating that this was boring maybe shouldn't have been watching this as they have no interest to learn more about the Butcher of Plainfield. But then again, as much as I've learned about Gein and people...sometimes I can see why he did what he did. People are idiots and huge hypocrites. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Jay K Slow and repetitive…almost like they needed to stretch an episode into four. After seeing the shocking images in the first episode, really boring.
