Insufferable middle-management type David Brent is the center of this mockumentary-style comedy set at a nondescript paper company in a nondescript office park in England. David doesn't realize that his employees -- among them beaten-down salesman Tim, under-appreciated receptionist Dawn and truly weird Gareth - put up with his feeble jokes and inappropriate behavior only because he signs the paychecks.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

With a first season that altered the TV comedy landscape, the original British version of The Office proves the most mundane parts of daily life can be as hilarious as they are cringeworthy.

The Office is a very funny spoof documentary series, though more "Ouch!" than "Ha, ha!" Go to Full Review

It's a wonderful, subversive concept, and by failing to romanticize the players, Office remains true to its ghastly, funny self. Go to Full Review

The first time you watch the show, you really don't believe what you're seeing. Go to Full Review

"The Office" isn't a place anyone in his or her right mind would want to work, but shadowing these characters for a half-hour is entertainment at its most brilliantly nuanced. Go to Full Review

The brilliance of the series lies in this juxtaposition of the seemingly boring with the outrageous. Go to Full Review

Even though some thought it wasn't funny at all, due to its cringe-worthy humour and awkward characters, it's certainly an achievement to take all of these terribly unlikeable people and make us fall in love with them. Go to Full Review

saby s @RT61552573 Nov 8 Cringe. Looove Gervais, Martin, Extras, but The Office is unwatchable to me. See more Gareth v @geewah 06/24/2023 Genius. One of the finest comedies ever made. Smart, hilarious, uncomfortable at times and addictive. A show that to this day stays relevant. See more Eri T @RT20108307 03/18/2023 One of the strengths of the show is its ensemble cast, with each character bringing their own quirks and foibles to the table. Tim (Martin Freeman) is the slacker salesman with a heart of gold, while Dawn (Lucy Davis) is the receptionist who dreams of a better life. Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) is the uptight and overly enthusiastic assistant to the regional manager, and his interactions with Tim are some of the show's funniest moments. The show's humor is often dry and subtle, with a heavy emphasis on the awkwardness and discomfort of everyday situations. It's not a show that relies on big laughs or outrageous situations, but rather on the slow buildup of tension and the subtle humor of the characters' interactions. This approach might not appeal to everyone, but for those who enjoy a more understated style of comedy, "The Office" is a must-watch. Overall, "The Office" is a hilarious and well-crafted show that manages to find humor in the mundane and the uncomfortable. With its strong cast and sharp writing, it remains a classic of British television and a must-watch for anyone who loves dry humor and cringe-worthy moments. See more Read all reviews
