The close-knit, Chicago-based O'Neals seem to be the perfect Catholic family, but when surprising truths come to light, some lives take an unexpected turn. Eileen, Pat, Kenny, Jimmy, Shannon and Jodi decide to let the honesty ring in a new, less tidy chapter of their story, where they all drop their carefully honed facades and discover the unexpected freedom that accompanies just acting real. Instead of being torn apart, the O'Neals find that their newfound way of life actually brings them closer together. Read More Read Less

David Sims The Atlantic Like The Middle or The Goldbergs, the show is a sunny, single-camera comedy with occasional flights of fancy, but like Black-ish, it's not afraid to go after tougher issues in a funny way. Mar 3, 2016 Full Review Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com I kept waiting for it to be edgier, smarter, and just funnier. Maybe that will come with time, although ABC may not have the patience for the show to find itself. Mar 2, 2016 Full Review Brian Moylan Guardian Give it some time. ABC has had such a killer record with shows like this (The Goldbergs, The Middle, and even the ageing Modern Family are all equally excellent) that I can't imagine this won't find its groove. Mar 2, 2016 Full Review Tim Surette TV.com This half-hour series... delicately wrings the notion of the fam-com instead of scrunching it into something more precise, leaving it a pale follower to ABC's other trailblazing series. Mar 4, 2016 Full Review Roger Catlin rogercatlin.com There's not enough here to care about, though the fact that the church itself is upset enough to run ads against it might make it seem more interesting than it is. Mar 4, 2016 Full Review Kari Croop Common Sense Media While Savage's own views on sex and religion have been labeled by some as "controversial," this fictionalized take on his Catholic adolescence is surprisingly conventional when you strip it down to its core elements.
